From an early age, John learned the value of hard work, honesty, and integrity. He grew up on what would now be called a homestead in West Tennessee, helping support his family on the farm. At 17, he joined the U.S. Air Force, beginning a chapter marked by duty and steady commitment. After his father died, John was released early and returned home to help care for his mother and younger siblings.
John met Phyllis while they were both working at a hospital. He quickly fell in love, and they married when he was just 19. Together, they began building a family and a life, moving to Nashville in 1964. In 1968, John joined State Farm as a scratch agent, starting without a book of business and selling every policy himself. His efforts helped build what became the largest agency in Nashville at the time. During his 53-year career with State Farm, he held several management roles and earned numerous honors, including Lifetime Member status in the President’s Club.
John was a lifelong avid University of Tennessee football fan and enjoyed investing in the stock market. He used the success he achieved from humble beginnings to benefit others, primarily through education, funding many scholarships to students who needed help to be able to achieve their degrees.
John was married for 67 years to his loving wife, Phyllis Ray. Their life together reflected devotion, faithfulness, and the enduring strength of family. In his later years, John was dedicated to caring for Phyllis and providing for her needs.
John is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Ray; son, John Ray (Monica); daughters, Joanna Williams and Jacquelyn Ray; grandson, Emory Williams (Megan); granddaughters, Rachel Williams, Savannah Ray, and Annelisa Williams; grandson, John Ray; and great-grandsons, Carter Williams and Liam Williams.
Visitation will be held Friday from 12 pm - 2 pm at Hermitage Funeral Home. Celebration of life to follow at 2 pm. Entombment at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
