Ken was born in Martin, Tennessee. Shortly after he began school, his father answered the call to ministry and became a pastor, leading the family to relocate frequently. As a result, Ken attended eight different schools over the course of his twelve years of education. Despite the many moves, one life-changing experience occurred the summer before his junior year of high school when he attended church camp. There, he was invited to sing in the camp choir, igniting a passion for church music that would shape the course of his life.
When he returned home that fall, Ken enrolled in his high school choir and cherished every moment of singing during his junior and senior years. After graduation, he attended Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee, where he studied church music. During the spring semester of his freshman year, he accepted his first position as Music Director at Rayon City Baptist Church. It was during a spring revival at the church that he met the love of his life, Patsy Brewer, who had come to sing in a visiting trio. Their shared love of music and faith blossomed into a lifelong partnership.
Ken later served as Music Director at First Baptist Church in Carthage, Tennessee. While attending Belmont, he and Patsy faithfully traveled from Nashville to Carthage every Sunday, spending the entire day serving the church before returning home after the evening service. They also made the trip each Wednesday evening for choir rehearsal and worship. It was during their time in Carthage that they became engaged and were married.
Throughout his ministry, Ken faithfully served several churches, including Saturn Drive Baptist Church in Nashville, where he ministered for six years before leaving to pursue his master's degree. He then served nearly ten years as Music Director at Grace Baptist Church in Nashville before returning to Saturn Drive Baptist Church, where he faithfully served for another decade. Through every church, Ken's love for worship, music, and serving the Lord touched countless lives.
In addition to his ministry, Ken devoted more than 31 years to education with Metro Nashville Public Schools. He taught music and English at East High School until its closure in 1986. He then became one of the original faculty members at Hunters Lane High School, where he taught English from its opening in 1986 until his retirement in 2003. Generations of students remember him not only as a gifted teacher but also as a caring mentor who invested deeply in their lives.
Ken and Patsy were blessed with two children, Tiffany Michelle and Kenneth Christopher. While Patsy devoted over 30 years of service to the State of Tennessee, Ken treasured the summers he spent at home with Tiffany and Chris while she worked. Those summers became some of his happiest memories. Alongside a fellow teacher, Ken operated a lawn care business, and Tiffany and Chris spent many summer days riding in the back of an old green pickup truck as their dad mowed yards across town. Many of his customers welcomed the children inside for cookies and television while Ken worked — memories the family continues to cherish.
Following retirement, Ken and Patsy found even greater joy in caring for their grandchildren. They lovingly kept their grandson Avery beginning when he was just three months old. Nearly three years later, grandsons J.R. and Cooper, born only two months apart, spent their early years together at "P and Pop Pop's," the affectionate names given to Ken and Patsy by their grandchildren. When the boys began preschool, P and Pop Pop delighted in taking them to school each morning and picking them up each afternoon. Those years remain among the family's most treasured memories.
After retiring, Ken and Patsy became faithful members of Tulip Grove Baptist Church, where they both sang in the choir. Ken continued to worship through music until illness eventually made it impossible for him to sing, though his love for music and the Lord never diminished.
Above all else, Ken will be remembered as a devoted follower of Christ, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, and friend. His gentle spirit, unwavering faith, dedication to music, commitment to education, and deep love for his family left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Paul Keith. He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Patsy; his daughter, Tiffany (Michael); his son, Kenneth Christopher "Chris" (Heather); his four beloved grandchildren, Avery, J.R., Cooper, and Charlotte; his brother, Danny; and many extended family members, former students, church members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Though his earthly song has ended, we rejoice knowing that Ken now sings with the heavenly choir in the presence of his Lord and Savior. His legacy of faith, music, service, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
There will be a Gathering of Family & Friends at Hermitage Funeral Home on Friday, July 17, from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. A Celebration of Ken's Life will follow at 2:00 PM in the Tulip Grove Chapel at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Phil Lundy. Following the service, Ken will be laid to rest in a mausoleum in the Garden of Memories at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
