Martha "Syble" Barnett Norman, 93 of Old Hickory passed peacefully to her heavenly home on June 30, 2026. Syble was born into a small farming community in Marshall County TN to Odus and Mattie Bell Liggett Barnett. Her parents worked as sharecroppers before purchasing their own working farm. She moved to Nashville after high school, then made her final home in Old Hickory in 1970.
In addition to her parents, Syble was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Jack Murphy Norman, and son Kenneth Murphy Norman.
She is also predeceased by her sisters, Sarah Mae McGown, Olivia Donegan, Rachel Low, Marion Moulder, Betty Reed and Faye Barnett. Syble leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Sherry (Larry) Carney, Rosemary (Patrick) Neely, and Candice (Jeremy) Hayes; her grandchildren, Christopher (Mattie) Neely and Andrew Neely; and her great-grandchildren, Claire and Grant Hayes and Caralyn and Camryn Neely.
As a stay home Mom, she spent her days keeping a flower garden, nurturing children, planning family get togethers, sewing clothes for her children and keeping a warm loving home for her family. Her family considered her the perfect Mother. She supported her children in their pursuits, always offering wise common-sense advice, and a patient listening ear or a shoulder to cry on when necessary. She accepted everyone as they were and believed everyone was inherently good at heart. Syble was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Community for more than 55 years.
Syble's favorite pastimes included: playing games, especially Bridge and Rook, gardening, reading, cooking, catering to her beloved cat, Molly, and watching game shows, especially Wheel of Fortune. Her loving presence will continue to live on in our hearts.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 6, 2026 from 10:00am ~ 11:00am with a Celebration of Life at 11:00am and the entombment to follow all at Hermitage Funeral Home 535 Shute Lane Old Hickory, TN 37138
