Mary peacefully passed in her sleep on May 16, 2019, at the age of 82. She was born on November 12, 1936, in Old Hickory, Tennessee, to the late Myrtle and Gilbert F. Swinea, Sr. Mary was a devoted mother and grandmother and full of compassion for all. Her deep love and goodness was widely shared and remains with us.
Mary was a lifelong member of Old Hickory United Methodist Church where she was former Sunday school teacher, a graduate of DuPont High School (1954), and a retiree of Tennessee Christian Medical Center, where she worked for 30 years. She attended St. Thomas Nursing School.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law Gilbert and Mildred Swinea, son Steve Barnett, and son-in-law Charley Elliott. She is survived by five children, Debbie Barnett, Sherry Barnett Elliott, Larry Barnett, Richard Barnett, and Tim Barnett (Stefanie). She loved nothing more than spending time with family, especially with her four cherished grandchildren Rachel Elliott, Taylor Elliott, Josh Barnett, and Jessie Barnett. She is also survived by her sister Becky Swinea Thompson (Jim), Tracy Barnett Brumley, as well as many beloved and caring in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be held Monday, May 20 from 4:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be conducted at Hermitage Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, May 21, at 11 AM with visitation from 10-11 AM. Services will be officiated by Pastor Dave Winton.
Flowers are welcomed and tribute gifts may be given to the charity of choice.
