

Milton (“Milt”) Stewart Herring, age 90, of Hendersonville, TN went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. Milt was a 1953 graduate of Maury High School in Norfolk, VA and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech’s Cooperative Program in 1961. Beginning as a co-op student in college and until his retirement in 1996, he was employed by DuPont de Nemours, Inc. (DuPont). His career at DuPont spanned across many product lines and several DuPont plant locations in Kinston, NC, Wilmington, DE with his longest tenure in Old Hickory, TN for 25 years until his retirement. In 1961, Milt had a patent issued in his name as submitted through the Dacron Manufacturing Division at DuPont for a rectangular convergence guide. He could fix anything and was usually busy with a current household project. He loved to travel with his wife, Ann, and friends and family. Milt enjoyed fishing, especially with his brother, Carl, at Kerr Lake on the North Carolina and Virginia border. Milt and Carl also enjoyed Virginia Tech football and went to many Virginia Tech college bowl games together with Ann and Carl’s wife, Shirley. An avid golfer for most of his life, he could also be found on spring weekends watching golf tournaments. He kept his mind sharp in retirement by working for Advanced Tax and Income Services during tax season for many years. A member of Hermitage United Methodist Church and the AntiCant Sunday School class for over 50 years, he served in several roles at the church including the Finance Committee and Stephen Ministries as well as a Lay Leader during the worship services. Milt loved his family well, especially his grandchildren, and was a friend to many.
Preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Ann Law Herring; parents Leslie Carl Herring, Sr. and Audry Smith Herring; Brother James Herring, Brother Leslie Carl Herring, Jr.
Survived by Son Brad (Stephanie) Herring, Daughter Lisa (Duane) Hayward, Grandchildren Mallory Herring, Tanner (Candice) Herring, Josh Hayward, Olivia (Will) Risher, and Seth Hayward; a great grandchild Everly Risher. Also survived by his cousin Eddie Griffin (Barbara) of Elizabeth City, NC and sister-in-law Shirley Herring of Suffolk, VA with whom he also shared close family ties.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 30, 2025 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Hermitage Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. A funeral service for Milton will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Hermitage United Methodist Church with Rev. Jimmy Hendricks and Rev. Garry Speich officiating. Visitation will also take place on Wednesday October 1 at 10am till the time of service at Hermitage United Methodist Church. Interment to follow at Hermitage Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens with Brad Herring, Tanner Herring, Will Risher, Duane Hayward, Josh Hayward, and Seth Hayward serving as pallbearers. Cecil Stone, Robert Biddle, David Hathcock, Harry Northcutt, and Scott Stone will serve as Honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hermitage United Methodist Church.
