Robert Lee Johnson, Jr., age 95, grew up on the Johnson family farm, south of Jonesboro, Georgia. At the age of 19, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines, and graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with an Associate Degree in Engineering.
Bob served with the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II in combat zones in the Atlantic, Europe, the Pacific and Asia. He received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Maritime Service with the title of Lieutenant Commander and from the United States Naval Reserves with the title of Lieutenant (j grade). His career was as a Professional Safety Engineer and as a Safety Consultant.
Bob died in his home on August 21, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Ann Davis Johnson; by his parents, Robert Lee Johnson, Sr., and Manche Stanton Johnson; brothers, James, Stanton and Walter Johnson; sisters, Mary Henry and Margaret Copeland; daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Johnson.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sue Stephens Johnson; daughters, Janie Louise Johnson and Carol J. Winn; son, Robert Lee Johnson III and his wife Dawn. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Heather Tuitupou (Tui’), Jennifer Johnson, Kelly Petre (Chuck), Tyler Johnson (Alli), Joey Winn (Scarlett), Mary Borton (Nick) and by ten great-grandchildren. Bob was greatly loved and cherished by all of his family and friends.
Friends and family will be received at Tulip Grove Baptist Church, 563 Shute Lane, Old Hickory, TN 37138 on Sunday, August 26, at 1:00 pm. The Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 pm.
