Shirley Doran, Born May 1, 1927, passed away in her home, surrounded by family members and caring friends, on March 20, 2014. She was supported and comforted during her declining days by both those who loved her, and by devoted caregivers. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Madeline and Leo Yates of Martin, Tennessee, as well as 6 brothers and sisters. Cherishing her memory are her devoted husband of 65 years, James Reed Doran Sr.; their children James Reed Doran Jr. (Johniene) & Stephen Lee Doran (Pam) each of Nashville. Also surviving her are three grandchildren- Heather Kuhns (Klay), Mallory and Reed Doran, and three great grandchildren- Presley, Kinsley and Brody Kuhns.
An active woman all her life, she devoted herself to family, friends and her church, attending Pennington Bend Church of Christ for almost 50 years. As a result of being raised on the family farm, she grew up with a love of the outdoors. She particularly enjoyed the time spent working in her yard and garden. In her middle years, she favored family events like trips to the beach, camping and boating. In retirement years, she enjoyed reunions with friends of her youth, foreign travel, and golf on lovely days. She played competitive tennis to an age when most people are watching the play of others.
Shirley lived a long and inspiring life. She functioned as the loving center for a multiple generational family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends consider making donations to support the research for care and/or prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.
Visitation with family will be at Hermitage Memorial Gardens on Saturday, March 22, at 1 PM.
A brief grave side service is to follow at 3 PM.
