Walter loved spending time outdoors, working in his yard, taking care of his home, and keeping his cars clean. He had lots of energy and enjoyed staying busy. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany, and was also a dedicated member of the Masons.
Walter met the love of his life, Jacque, on a blind date arranged by friends. Their first date was at Shoney's, and they quickly fell in love. They shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. Jacque was his everything.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Jacque Whitaker; his daughter, Leigh Messick; his grandson, Joshua (Jackie) Messick; and his great-grandchildren, Rylan Malone-Messick and Luna Malone-Messick.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter M. Whitaker, Sr. and Lou Ella Whitaker; his sisters, Josephine Rice, Frankie Whitaker, and Ollen Whitaker; and his brother, Corbitt Whitaker.
Visitation will be Monday, August 3, 2026 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and Tuesday, August 4, 2026 from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm with the Graveside service starting at 1:00pm all at Hermitage Funeral Home 535 Shute Lane Old Hickory TN 37138.
Walter will be remembered for his love of family, his hard work, and the kindness and energy he shared with everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
Officiating the graveside service will be Jimmy Hendrix.
