Lyme- Emil (Max) Ewankow, 88, passed on Saturday, June 27, 2015 with his wife Marion by his side at his home in Lyme, Ct. He was born in New York City, the son of the late Irene Helen Sankow Ewankow and Emil Ewankow, on September 5, 1926.
His love of nature brought him to Lyme, where his mothers´ family settled in the early 1900s. There, he, together with Marion Eggeraat Ewankow, his wife of nearly 62 years, built their home, both literally and figuratively, and raised their five children.
An active man, he shared many activities with his family; he enjoyed camping, hiking, skiing, skating, swimming, boating, watching wildlife, tending to numerous pets, and puttering in the yard. He and his family belonged to the New England Volkswagen Campers´ Club and were very involved with scouting; he was Scoutmaster for several years. His travels brought him to Mexico, Canada, New Mexico, Europe, Florida, New York, and all of New England; places where he especially enjoyed local cultures and the outdoor beauty of mountains, rivers, and the coastal waters.
He also had a love of music and theater; playing guitar and singing bluegrass, folk, and country music. And he was an avid dancer. Max and Marion belonged to the square dance club the Lads and Lassies and danced polkas at a local Polish club. They enjoyed ushering for the Garde Theater and Ivoryton Playhouse and listening to the many concerts of shoreline Connecticut.
He worked 38 years as a Senior Designer for Electric Boat, where he was best known by the nickname Joe. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and attended Columbia University. He is predeceased by his son Jonathan Ewankow, twin sister, Lucy Evankow, sister Gloria Maddocks, and brothers (also twins) Sigmund Evankow and Henry Ewankow. He will be missed by son Michael Ewankow, daughters Maxine Ewankow, Janine Smith, and Marlene Ewankow, daughter-in-law Tracy Messervy, granddaughters Ellen Ewankow and Jaime Smith, grandson Gavin Infantino, great-grandson Mason Whittle, and several nieces and nephews.
