

Ethyl C. (Masheck) Comerford, 92, died on January 8th, 2013 at the Fairview Nursing Home in Groton, Ct. Since 2005, she had lived with her daughter, Rosemary Reid in Old Lyme, CT moving to Fairview in April 2012. Born January 14, 1920 in Astoria, New York to Joseph Masheck and Rose (Cermak) Masheck, she got her A.B. degree in 1940 from what was then known as St. Joseph’s College for Women in Brooklyn, New York. Upon graduation, she held a number of secretarial positions in Manhattan including working at Universal Pictures and Kimberly Clark.
In 1955, she meet the love of her life, Peter J. Comerford. On September 8, 1956, they were married at St. Francis Church in Astoria, New York. They were blessed with two children and joyfully raised them in Flushing, NY. In 1965, the family moved to Sag Harbor, New York upon Peter’s retirement. Ethyl soon began teaching in Most Holy Trinity School in East Hampton. She was active in the Columbiettes, as well as the Ladies’ Village Improvement Society, and was a devoted parishioner in St. Andrew’s Parish where she served as Director of Religious Education after her retirement from teaching in 1985.
After moving to Old Lyme, she attended Christ the King Parish, where she was embraced by morning prayer group and loved the fellowship of these wonderful women. She kept active with cooking, crocheting, swimming and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Peter J. of Portsmouth, RI, his wife Diane and twin daughters Mary Rose and Caryn Leigh; and her daughter, Rosemary Reid, of Old Lyme, ct., her husband Paul, and children Daniel and Katie. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Peter, her brother, Joseph Masheck, and five grandchildren, Patrick, Margaret, Brian, William and David Reid.
Calling hours will be held at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith La., Old Lyme on Friday January 11, 2013 from 4pm-7pm. The funeral procession will assemble on Saturday at 10am at the funeral home and will proceed to a 11am Mass of Christian Burial at Christ the King Church, McCurdy Rd.,Old Lyme. A graveside service will be held on Monday at 11am in St. Andrew's Cemetery in Sag Harbor. The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff at Fairview, from the Bistro to the nursing and support staff, who gave great care and comfort to Mom.
