Florence "Wendy" Kerop

February 7, 1944April 19, 2021

Chester – Florence Wendover Kerop “Wendy”, 77, of Hickory Hill Drive, passed away Monday, April 19, 2021, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. Wendy was born February 7, 1944, in New London, CT, the daughter of the late John and Alys Griswold Haman. She lived in Old Lyme until she married. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Wendy earned a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She worked as a nurse at Highland Hall & Aaron Manor until she started her family. She married Harry Kerop on October 3, 1969, in Framingham, MA. They met through a mutual enjoyment of CB Radios. It is told that she “accidentally” spilled water in her radio so she could visit Harry for repairs. They raised their family in Deep River, CT and later moved to Old Lyme. Wendy was a member of The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme and after moving back to Old Lyme, became the Junior Choir Director and the Director of Christian Education for many years. Her family & friends lovingly referred to her as “The Church Lady” from Saturday Night Live. She loved visiting Maine. Loved the shoreline, watching the boats and sailing. Although she never returned to nursing, she always had that caring, compassionate, protective nature. She volunteered at the Old Lyme Schools playing the piano for the chorus or helping with school plays. She was one to always stop and lend a hand to anyone that needed assistance. She volunteered at the Estuary Council for Seniors in Old Saybrook, CT and was also a companion for Companion & Homemakers spending time with and helping seniors in the area. Wendy loved dogs and loved watching and attending dog shows. Especially the Westminster Dog Show in NYC. The Flat-Coated Retriever held a special place in her heart, as did her dog, Finnegan. She loved watching sports. She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, tennis, golf, basketball and skating. No one dared bother her during March Madness. She always had a love of books. She could never understand why anyone would want to use a digital e-reader and not experience the actual book in your hand, the turning of the page, and the entire reading experience. She co-owned The Turning Page Bookstore in Old Lyme with her daughter for 6 years. Wendy loved her family & friends, especially her grandchildren. She loved seeing them grow and all their great accomplishments. She was very proud. She is predeceased by her husband, Harry. She is survived by her daughter, Julie Kerop of Chester; her son, Adam and his wife Dana (Concascia) Kerop of Deep River; and her three beloved grandchildren, Gabriella, Adam, and Celia Kerop. Wendy is also survived by extended family and many dear friends who all held a very special place in her heart. A private burial will be held at Duck River Cemetery in Old Lyme, CT. A celebration of Wendy’s life will take place later this year. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the ASPCA or American Heart Association.

What a lovely, funny, sweet lady she was. We had the pleasure of seeing her in action with The Rainbow Choir, through which she was responsible for bringing us into the FCCOL family. She could have had her own sitcom based on the beautiful but entertaining way she engaged the children in that choir! We will never forget her.

I will never forget the Hot tub experience with all the soap foaming up and so many other fun times we have shared. I thank God that I have had Wendy and the Kerop family in my life for all these years. I shall miss our almost weekly telephone calls over the past few years and her sharing all the updates on her family, especially the grandchildren and their adventures. sending my love and deepest sympathies to all of you.

Adam and Julie - I am deeply saddened to hear of your mother's death. I will greatly miss her kindness, humor and our shared interest in things "Old Lyme" as well as our "dislike" of the modernization of Christmas Carols and other hymns. I consider myself fortunate to haven known her. Best to you and your family.
