Gerald Fagan Holland

Born on August 16, 1931, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Gerald was the son of Charles Busiel Holland and Mary Julia Fagan Holland. He grew up with his three older brothers, Charles, John, and Paul, and developed a lifelong love of learning from an early age. Gerald attended Saint Mark's Parochial School in Dorchester, then graduated from Boston English High School in 1948. Inspired by his physics and chemistry teachers, he entered Boston College as a chemistry major and graduated in 1952. He then continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his doctorate in chemistry.

During his years at MIT, Gerald worked alongside many of the world's leading scientists in the study of antibiotics. His doctoral research included participation on a three-scientist team that

successfully synthesized Gramicidin S, an antibiotic first discovered by Russian scientists in soil samples during World War II. While at MIT, Gerald was invited to join the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. At NIH, he worked for the Director of Chemistry in the Arthritis Institute, where his research focused on identifying orally active components of insulin molecules. During his two year service as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service he conducted neurological research at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda.

Following his government service, Gerald joined Pfizer Central Research, first in Brooklyn, NY and later in Groton, Connecticut. He spent the next 37 years contributing to pharmaceutical research for cardiovascular, arthritic, and metabolic diseases. He discovered three clinical candidates in metabolic diseases that advanced to study and testing by Pfizer's Clinical Department. In his later years at Pfizer, he led efforts to name new clinical candidates in

collaboration with professional scientific organizations. Throughout his career at MIT, NIH, and Pfizer, Gerald authored or co-authored more than 85 scientific publications. At Pfizer Gerald met his future wife, Kathleen. Together they built a life centered on faith, family

and community, settling in Old Lyme, Connecticut, where they raised their four children. A man of deep faith, Gerald was an active member of Christ the King Church in Old Lyme, volunteered

with Catholic Charities, Old Lyme Town Committee and the Lyme-Old Lyme School Board. Through his faith and civic involvement, he demonstrated a lifelong commitment to serving both his community and those in need. Gerald enthusiastically supported his children's activities, coaching Little League baseball and spending countless hours driving to swim practices and meets. Whether on a baseball field or pool deck, he enjoyed cheering on his children. After his children left for college and throughout their adult lives, Gerald found another way to stay connected with them: he regularly sent articles he thought they should read. The subjects varied widely—from faith and health to finance and sports—reflecting his desire to continue sharing knowledge with his children throughout their lives.

Over the years, the Holland family shared many memorable ski trips together. Later in life, Gerald enjoyed traveling with Kathleen and their family to destinations including Thailand and the Dominican Republic.He treasured summers at the beach, where he swam regularly from June through October. Even into his late eighties, he maintained his daily swimming routine at the YMCA.

Gerald also enjoyed simple pleasures: picking strawberries and blueberries with his family and freezing them to enjoy throughout the winter, discussing Boston College football with anyone

willing to listen, and faithfully following his beloved Boston sports teams—the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and BC Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; children, Michele, Sean, Michael, and Teresa; and spouses and grandchildren, David, Emery, Mark, Chloe, Sam, Jonathan, Gerald, Kathleen, Claire, and

Nicholas; sister-in-law, Norma; brother-in-law, David; and 19 nieces and nephews. Gerald was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary Holland; his brothers Charles, John and Paul; his brother-in-law Thomas; his sisters-in-laws Sheila and Joan; and his niece and nephew.

Gerald's life was marked by unwavering faith, devotion to family, intellectual curiosity, scientific achievement, and a deep appreciation for the everyday joys of life. His legacy lives on through the family he cherished, the scientific contributions he made, and the many lives he touched.
