Nancy Hannas

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nancy Kielhurn Hannas, age 74, of Madison, CT. After a long and courageous medical journey, Nancy was welcomed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on July 31, 2026. Nancy was born on April 16, 1952, in Queens, NY, to Estelle and Charles Kielhurn. She was raised in Stony Brook, Long Island, where her artistic spirit and compassionate heart began to shine at an early age. Her creativity earned her the lifelong family nickname, "Fancy Nancy," a reflection of her natural eye for beauty, design, and style. Nancy later moved to New Vineyard, ME, where she married and began raising her family. In 1979, she relocated to Old Lyme, CT, and in 1992 made Madison her home. While Nancy deeply loved her three children, her greatest gift was her remarkable ability to nurture others. Her home was always open to anyone who needed an extra pillow, a warm meal, a listening ear, or simply the comfort of a loving friend. She had an extraordinary generosity of spirit and a heart that found joy in giving. That kindness is the legacy she leaves behind. Nancy was a gifted artist, talented painter, colorful gardener, accomplished cook, and creative designer. Her love for cooking brought family and friends together around countless meals that were prepared with exceptional care and beautifully presented. Her recipes, traditions, and high standards in the kitchen will continue to be lovingly carried on by her children and grandchildren. Her compassion extended far beyond her family. During the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1990s, Nancy became an early advocate and supporter, helping those affected by the epidemic. She also knitted one of the early AIDS Memorial Quilts, a testament to her empathy and willingness to stand beside those in need. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Estelle and Charles Kielhurn; her brothers, Charles and Lawrence; her sisters, Eileen and Estelle ("Honey"); and, most recently, her beloved identical twin sister and lifelong companion, Laura. She is survived by the three greatest blessings of her life: her children, Rachel (Edward), Eric (Edyta), and Mark. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Peter, Griffin, Gabriel, Cora, Aiden, and Colby, who brought her endless pride and joy. Nancy is also survived by her siblings, Linda, Annette, David, Philip, and Maria, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives she touched so deeply. Nancy's family extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Masonicare in Wallingford, CT. Their kindness, dedication, and loving care brought great comfort to Nancy and her family, and their generosity will never be forgotten. A celebration of Nancy's life will be held Sunday, 9/20/26 at 11am at Madison Beach Hotel in Madison, CT. Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing that Nancy's love, generosity, creativity, and unwavering faith will continue to live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her.
