Nancy Haines Wood

Mrs. Wood, daughter of Merrill A. and Meredith S. Haines and sister of Merrill, married L. Robert Wood and celebrated 62 years of marriage this year.

Nancy was born August 3, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA. The daughter of a railroad family who graduated from the Pennsylvania State University, she married L. Robert Wood in 1952. She raised her three children while living in Lynchburg and Richmond VA, Devon, PA and Lyme, CT. She was active in many organizations including The Women’s Exchange, many Garden Clubs, and her children’s school organizations. She also loved music and sang in multiple church choirs. Her family has a rich history in the United States; Nancy being a descendant of John Alden who came to America on The Mayflower and a great, great, great, great, great grandmother who was captured by Native American Indians and later escaped.

Residing in Lyme for the last 30 years, she and Bob enjoyed spending winter months in Tortola, BVI as well as world travel to many countries including Italy, France, Germany, England, Spain, Russia, Greece, China, New Zealand, the Galapagos Islands, Peru and Costa Rica.

She is survived by her loving husband, her daughter and son-in-law Susan Wood Henderson and Daniel Gregory Henderson of Lyme, son and daughter-in-law Charles Stuart Wood and Kathleen Tyler Wood of Kildeer, IL, son Andrew Robert Wood of Devon, PA, and six grandchildren Emily Lura Wood, Melanie Margaret Wood, Charles Tyler Wood, Daniel Gregory Henderson Jr, Elizabeth Henderson Hickey and husband Keith Lewis Hickey, and Katherine Merrill Henderson and fiancé Joshua Matthew Hirt.

A Memorial Service will be held on August 1, 2015 at 1:00pm in The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, 1 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme, CT 06371, with a reception immediately following in the Church Hall.
