Mr. Mac was my favorite teacher at Salem School. I'm now a sophomore in college, and I still find myself thinking about his classes every now and again. I would go back a couple times a year after I left Salem School and I would go visit him. He was also so kind to me, and to all the students. He made us feel so important and so proud of ourselves whenever we accomplished something new. I was a member of the Lego Club he ran after school in Salem. I loved that group so much. He made it so much fun. I looked forward to it every week. We were also so excited to show him what we built, and he was always there to encourage us and commend our crazy little contraptions. I pretty much ended up going into digital art in college because of him. He sparked my interest in technology way back when, and then I signed up for all those classes in high school. And now I'm getting my degree in digital design. All because of him and his wonderful classes. He is one of the reasons I am where I am today. I have so much to thank him for. In the words of my thirteen year old self, Mr. Mac was and is so awesome. So wonderfully, brilliantly, fantastically awesome. I'm so glad to have known him. What a wonderful man : ) You'll always be remembered. We could never forget you : ) Thank you for everything.

I am deeply saddened by Rob's passing and am so sorry for your loss.  Lorna, Mikey, Andre, Barry, Kevin, China, David, and all of your dear family have been very much in my heart and thoughts.   I cherish you and, in your grief, hope you find some solace in knowing that Rob's suffering has ended and that he has left so much goodness for us all to remember and learn from.

Lorna, I will always be deeply thankful to both you and Rob, for the magnitude of your friendship, especially in making your home next to us in Connecticut.  Through the innumerable conversations we've had and the life challenges we've worked our way through, you and Rob together have been among the rocks on which my life and Lee's have been anchored.  How can I begin to express the enormous, wonderful influence you've had on our lives?

How does one honor a friendship strong and long?  All I know is that I will treasure in my heart forever the joy and goodness Rob brought into my life and the strength of character he helped so much to build in my only child, through a very special relationship they shared.  His reach was wide – evident in the outpouring of love from so many quarters in the days and weeks following his passing.

For me, Rob's friendship was deeply felt, and always respectful, kind, and caring.  From the time that he, John, and I frolicked in the mountains of California, barely beyond our teens, through the decades when it was sustained despite considerable geographic distance by long phone calls and frequent visits in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and at the Jersey shore, to the years we've shared here in Connecticut through raising our families, his friendship has defined much of my life.  There are a thousand precious memories in it all.

I admired, and always will, so many things about you, Rob:  your selflessness in caring for your mother and brother in the months preceding their final hours, your wisdom, packaged in so many conversations, often over sports or coffee or near a fire you carefully tended, your determination and hard work in finishing college, teaching certification, and your masters the hard way, a class at a time over very many years, your deep love for Lorna and the beautiful life you created together, your complete devotion to Michael and Andre in every way, your passionate love of life, good will toward all, hard work on your house and land, the love you felt for your students and the effort and ingenuity you put into their learning   You were at once child-like in your playfulness, genuine, and wise beyond your years. I will miss you more than I can say.  I will listen in the mornings for your laughter in the wind.

I knew Rob during our high school days in Ridley, PA and was so sorry to hear of his death.  Rob was full of positive energy and always had a big smile for everyone.  I am so sorry for your loss.

Mr. Mac was a fantastic teacher at Salem School. He was also a wonderful leader of the Amistad Friendship Society. I am now a freshman in college and feel so lucky to have gotten to know him through class and this club.  Mr. Mac was an enthusiastic, kind-hearted, generous and wonderful person. On the day of his service I looked out my window and saw a small rainbow. I'm sure that was him letting all of us know that he is still with us.

Mr. McLaughlin was my favorite teacher in my years at Salem School. He was sincere and I could go to him for anything. He was dedicated and all around a great person. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher. He will be missed, no doubt. But, he will live on through all of the people he has reached out to.

We were encouraged to hear about Rob's life yesterday! All the witnesses of the beautiful light God shined through him and the obvious likeness to Christ he allowed God to make in him was inspiring and humbling. I hope we can all embrace faith, hope and love as he clearly did, here and now.

We remember you and yours every day in prayer, Lorna and it was encouraging to see what a loving church, family and friends you have behind you; please don't hesitate to call on us for anything at all.

My Dear Cousin, Rob, will be missed so much by his family and friends!  Rob was always able to take a situation, analyze it, and express his feelings  so well.  He was always concerned about how the other person was feeling and managed to come up with a way to make that person feel better.  Whether it was his smile, the twinkle in his eyes, the great bear hug, or his laughter, he could bring the conversation to a pleasant close.  In our last telephone conversation, he expressed that he knew Heaven was close--and how it was a good destination to end his journey.  I know our Lord greeted him with open arms and said, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."  Rob, we all loved you so much.  We will all carry a little piece of you in our hearts and will remember your good advice and carry it forward.  Everyone needs the Rob McLaughlin outlook on life!  It's up to us to pass it on.

Mr. Mac was my favorite teacher when I was at Salem School. I am now a sophomore and I still remember all of the educational games he let us play and all that he taught me. Without him, I would have given up on computers a long time ago. He was such a sincere man and a kind, incredible teacher. Salem has suffered a huge blow from the loss of this amazing teacher. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to you, his family, who had the honor of knowing him for many years. He impacted my life so greatly and he was only one a teacher of mine. He fought a courageous battle. I can not imagine how you are feeling right now. God bless all of you. And thank you Mr. Mac for teaching me to never give up.

Good morning Barry, 
I just learned, via an email from Ginny sent last night, that your brave brother passed on Sunday. 
It wasn't front page news like JoePa's passing the same day, but similar in sadness.  Your brother 
was a hero in our eyes for his fighting spirit whether it was to go to the Mayo Clinic in New York for frontier-breaking treatment or to the Univ. of Pittsburgh Medical Center for the cytoreductive surgery and the hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy treatment, or to continue to teach and to study for his Masters.  He never gave up.
As I drive by cemeteries these days, I always ponder how "I" want to be remembered.  How do you 
sum up one's life?  What's important in the end?
From afar, your brother was (1) loved very much by his wife and his family, particularly his brothers; (2) loved bird-watching;
(3) loved being a mentor to his 'grandchildren'; (4) loved teaching; and  (5) loved learning.
May his spirit live on in the stories that you will share with Jake of the memories you guys made 
over a lifetime.    In Casablanca, Bogart said "We will always have Paris".  I'm saying "You will always have Rob".

Rob was an extraordinary person.  He loved life and lived it to the fullest!  He appreciated and understood the value of all of the simple things in life.  He knew what really mattered.  It was evident how much he loved Lorna and all of his family.  He enjoyed spending time with his friends and teaching was a passion for him.  Our family was fortunate to be friends with Rob for many years.  They graciously welcomed us to their home every summer.  We have so many fond memories of times spent with him.  He taught our children how to fish and row a boat, among other things.  He was more of an uncle to them than a family friend.  We had the pleasure of having many long conversations with him.  He was always insightful with a positive attitude.  When we visited him several weeks ago, he didn't want the visit to be just about him, but for all of us to enjoy our time together. He is an example to all of us who watched him courageously fight his battle.  As he said to me, "I've been blessed with a good life.  I will be with Jesus".  Rob certainly deserves his eternal reward.  Whenever we think of him, it will bring a smile.  You are a very dear and special friend.  We will miss you greatly!

It is hard to let a friend go, mostly because of the painful void it creates.  While there will be difficulty coming to grips with your passing, Rob, there is so much you left behind to fill that void that has made my life better.  And I wanted to thank you for that, Rob.
What started between us upon meeting in the bleachers at the little league diamond a couple years ago evolved from there in many ways.   Over the years, our mutual interest in sports, particularly youth sports, expanded well beyond the little league diamond. We had great times together traveling around the state to take in a variety of youth sports, including baseball, basketball, soccer, and football games. We travelled far and wide to take in games in Glastonbury, Middletown, West Hartford, Durham, New London, and Manchester to name a few.  We spoke often of big games that were coming up or had taken place involving local school teams. One particularly memorable experience included that epic game at the Old Saybrook gym where David rose up to conquer Goliath and bring another Shoreline Championship to Old Lyme.  It was truly magical and I'm glad we shared that experience.  To Mike and Andre, I'm sure your PaPa would like nothing more than for you and your teams to be part of an experience like that at some point.  
 It wasn't spoken between us, Rob, but I saw this mutual interest in youth sports as a way to perhaps offer you a diversion from the difficult health issues you battled for years. 
We golfed together more than a few times, or should I say I followed you around the golf course whacking away at a ball while you golfed.  You taught me to not take the game or oneself very seriously.  You even succeeded in getting me out to the driving range a couple times,  always with a little competition involved to see who could put a ball closest to the target.  Needless to say, it was only luck on my part that I would win this game on that rare occasion. I think you let me win once in a while just to keep me coming back, but, Rob, I kept coming back to see that you continued to do the things that you loved.
I didn't know you as a teacher, Rob, but you spoke of it very often, of both the rewards received from having enriched the lives of those you taught as well as the challenges in accomplishing this end.  I have no doubt that the kids you taught are much better off for it.
There is one story that warms my heart me every time I recall it to myself, and I wanted to let you know how much it means to me.  It was a day perhaps a year ago or more, we managed to organize one of our favorite trips with the boys to a baseball diamond to give the boys some baseball practice.  This of course was at a point in your life that your illness had progressed significantly to the point that you had surgeries, therapies, and very harsh treatments, and were sporting various accessories as a result of all this.  And, while I wasn't sure it was a good idea on your part, you were game to pitch batting practice for the boys, took the field to scoop up ground balls and shag fly balls.  To me, this was nothing short of a remarkable display of determination and bravery in the face of very challenging personal circumstances.  But what I have not forgotten and will never, is when we were doing a little home-run derby at the little league field with the boys.  You were such a better athlete than I, so the duty of pitching to the boys to see if they might knock a few over the fence normally fell to you.  Well on this day, you also suggested that you and I take a few swings.  Well, as with the boys, you pitched great batting practice to me and I got a couple good swings on balls.  Problem: it's now Rob's turn to bat and who's going to pitch to Rob?   Well, I  stepped in and started hurling balls towards the plate, trying to serve up one, just one, good pitch that you might hit one over the fence.  It didn't go well.  I couldn't throw a decent pitch.  You were swinging at pitches inside, outside, and in the dirt.  You were so determined, as was I, to see that you hit a ball out of the park.  This went on for a while and it was obvious that you were tiring and reaching the end of you stamina (and patience I'm sure with my pitching) when finally I offered up a pitch right down the middle, and you did hit it out of the park, Rob.  I could not have been happier for you.  To me that single act epitomized the person that you are, the determination and pride that you demonstrated, the courage you had to stand up to your challenges and limitations, life lessons that I'm sure you weren't knowingly or deliberately teaching at the moment.  But life lessons were taught and learned in powerful fashion on that occasion.  And I thank you and will always remember you for that, Rob.
The final part of the story is that I returned to the ball field another day, went in search of that home run ball you hit into the trees beyond the fence, and, yes, I did find that ball.  While I haven't mentioned this to you until now, I hope it's not too late to offer the memory of this to you because I know you're listening at this moment and say simply “Your life has been a home run, my friend. You hit it out of the park and thanks for letting me be a small part of it.”

I will always think of Rob with respect, admiration and gratitude.  He was a gracious and thoughtful colleague, always willing to share ideas and always enthusiastic about trying new things. As a parent, I appreciated his dedication to children and how hard he worked to understand and meet the needs of all kids.  My kids have many, many fond memories of Mr. Malaughlin. We are very lucky to have known him.

Rob was a remarkable child of God.  He was gentle yet courageous.  He was compassionate and unselfish.   He was a great example to both of us on how to live and how to deal with leaving this earth. Mr. McLaughlin was my computer teacher through middle school.  And in the years that I knew him, I found out what a humble, selfless, kind-hearted person he was.There aren't enough kind words in the world to describe the man he was. Mr. McLaughlin was a great teacher in all my time in Salem School. Even now as I am a sophmore in highschool, I still find myself whenever I type on the computer, I am always thinking about all the times I had to do Type to Learn and how frustrating it was at the time. Now looking back on it, I realize how thankful I am for it I would have never been able to do half the stuff I learned on that computer without him. He was a great teacher and taught everyone a lot while making it fun, he was a one of a kind and will surely be missed.

What a very great thing for Rob to have touched so many lives in such a positive way, particularly in the classroom and at home.  Our sincere condolences on such a loss, especially to his cherished grandchildren.

Robs love for our LORD is an understanding that those that know, love and serve the LORD understand that Rob is singing heavenly praises now.  Lorna may GODS love surround you and your family, may his strength be your strength and his comfort be your comfort.  GOD can get us through what we can not get through ourselves.
We will miss him and are so deeply blessed to have known you both.  I believe Rob submission to the LORD will not go unnoticed, he planted seeds as a man of GOD! 

The Depth of our love for you both is amazing.  Again, I Thank our Lord & Savior we were blessed to have had an opportunity to have met Rob.

Rob was a true inspiration. He would always make time for his friends at school and spoke so lovingly of his family at home. I will truly miss his friendship whether its the sports talk before class, afternoon golf games, or seeing him at a Glastonbury Girls Basketball game. He touched so many lives and I am fortunate to be one of those.

Rob had a soft, gentle manner that put everyone at ease. He was a great role model not only for the children of Salem School, but for the adults as well. I loved to talk with Rob about raising children in our increasingly busy world, and I valued his insights about how the most important things aren't things at all. His words were simple, but heartfelt. We were blessed to have him as a teacher among us.

Rob, I feel very fortunate that I was blessed with your friendship; you had a way of making everyone feel very special and comfortable.  No matter what struggles you were going through, you always put the needs of others first.

I appreciated that Rob saw value in little things.  He knew that stones picked from the path or an odd piece of wood were a joy to hold.  

He could tell me the name of a bird, the shape of its wings, and what its flight told us.  And he could laugh and understand that the name didn't always matter and the stir of a bird's flight was a pleasure in itself.

Rob was, to me, the family one chooses - not because he simply accepted the differences in us, but because he seemed to genuinely value them.  As did I.

Thanks Rob.  Those things stay with me.

Rob was truly an inspiration; his kindness, compassion, generosity, strength, and determination are legacies we can all aspire to uphold.  His smile and positive spirit will be greatly missed.

I'll always remember Rob's patience and support as he taught an inferior student about tennis and life (at the same time).  Rob cared about the wellbeing of others, even as his own health declined.  Truly a wonderful person.  I miss you Rob.

Rob knew to take time for the important things.  While golf and work were certainly on that list, friends and family were first.  I am very fortunate to have had him as my friend and will miss playing “just a few more holes” with him when it's too dark to see where our shots landed. (The last hole we played together we both found ours on the green!) Having known Rob makes me a better person, for he was truly the best, always gracious, caring, funny and wise.  And as someone recently noted, Rob had the best laugh; I can hear it now.  Thanks Rob, for all you gave to me.

Like one of our 6 grade graders said, "balancing teaching with a smile", he was always balancing life with a smile.  I thank you Robby for giving me a great advice about teaching many years ago,"Just be you, the kids will love it".

Mr. McLaughlin had been my computer teacher for 6 years and there was nobody else I would have chosen to teach me it. He was a great man and had a relationship with his kids like no other. My heart goes out to his family and I plan on paying my respects at his service.

I feel so fortunate to have been touched by Rob and his generous spirit since the time when we both arrived at Salem School a decade ago. His students have learned so much more than technology from him. I have always been moved by his passionate devotion to teaching and his family. His courage and determination during the  trying ups and downs of illness were awesome, and just typical Rob.

Rob, you were there for me from the beginning when I got my first teaching job at Salem. I'll never forget that your smiling face was one of the first ones I saw there. I was so happy to have you on my team for almost four years through both good times and bad. You were a wonderful teacher and a wonderful person and I will miss you from the bottom of my heart. Rest well, friend.  My prayers to your family during this time.

So deeply saddened by the loss of such an amazing man. His strength, courage, and true love of life was apparent in all that he did. Rob touched the lives of so many and will be greatly missed. Wishing you peace and comfort always, Jen W.

I will miss Mr. McLaughlin.  He was my teacher at Salem School.  He always knew exactly how to balance teaching us important stuff and letting us have fun.  He is someone I will always look up to.  I will remember his friendly smile and ability to be firm (but kind) with us when he needed to be.  He helped me to have confidence in myself by being the best teacher he could be.  My prayers and thoughts are with his family and those close to him during this sad time.
