Shirley Conroy, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished community member of Old Lyme, passed away peacefully in her home on January 19, 2025, just two days after her 93rd birthday. Born in Bridgeport, CT, on January 17, 1932, Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband, Jack Conroy, with whom she was happily married to in 1955.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother Shirley found her greatest joy in her family. She is survived by her two sons, Paul Conroy and wife Bethany of Old Lyme, Matt Conroy of Chester, daughter Nora McManus of Groton and brother Paul Ingersoll and wife Mercy of Stratford.
Shirley’s grandchildren—Kathryn, Christopher, and Erin McManus; Shannon Perry; and Samantha, Allison and Jack Conroy—were the lights of her life. She was also blessed with two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Harper Perry, who brought her much delight.
For 20 years, Shirley was the cherished secretary at Mile Creek School in Old Lyme, where her warm presence, dedication and ability to never forget a name made a lasting impact on the community. She was also an active member of the Duck River Garden Club, where her love for gardening and nature flourished. Her green thumb was evident to all who had the pleasure of joining her on her back deck where she could always be found with a good book and glass of diet green tea.
Shirley had an impeccable eye for fashion, design and loved to decorate. Her style was refined and timeless. Whether it was her home, outfits, or seasonal touches, Shirley’s flair for style was always on display.
Shirley’s love of travel took her to many places, but her fondest memories were made on the shores of Cape Cod at Nauset Beach, where her family and dear friends vacationed every summer for 50 plus years.
Shirley’s legacy of love, grace, and devotion will live on in her family and all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will be carried forward in the hearts of those she touched.
A memorial service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 11:00am in Christ the King Church, 1 McCurdy Rd., Old Lyme, CT.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in honor of Shirley to Middlesex Hospice.
