OBITUARY

Alice M. Smith

February 10, 1931October 14, 2019

Alice Margaret Smith, age: 88 passed away on October 14, 2019. She was the widow of Frank A. Smith. Alice and Frank were married for over 50 years before he passed away in 2008 Alice was born February 10, 1931 in Wheeling West Virginia to the late Carl Woodson and Maudie Smith Woodson.

She and her husband previously resided in New Haven CT before settling in Cheshire CT. Alice graduated from SCSU with her Bachelor of Arts degree and her Master degree in early education and was employed by St Martin De Porres School and the New Haven Public School System for over 30 years. Alice retired on June 30, 1999.

She was a member of Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church for all of her adult life and had her children involved in the church as well. She was also very active in many of the organizations within the church. Alice was a devoted wife and mother who cherished time spent with her family. In addition to raising their children, she maintained her career as an elementary school teacher. A lighthearted woman, she had a loving and gentle nature with a great sense of humor. Her favorite saying was “Keep the Faith” in which she embodied the sentiment. She was a life member of The Mothers of Twins club. She was talented in arts & crafts, such as sewing and knitting and was an excellent seamstress in her child rearing years. She made many of her daughter’s and her own clothes. Alice also enjoyed baking and gardening and loved to travel with her family - and then later once the children were grown - with her husband.

She is survived by and will be dearly missed by: her daughter Linda Williams and her husband Charles of Westbrook CT, her daughter Janet Atwell and her husband Michael of Palm Bay FL, her son James Smith of New Haven CT, and her sister Betty Branham and her husband Warren of Port St Lucie FL.

12 Grandchildren: Colandra Webster, Kimberly McKie, Kwame Grier, Aleesha Grier-Rogers, Nicole Allston, DeNisha Allston, Hamisi Grier, Jamilia Djordjevic, Rashid Grier, Errol Nisbeth Jr, Shalice Nisbeth, Adam Smith, 15 Great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, dear friends, neighbors, and her two cats Shiner and Onyx.

Alice was predeceased by: two sisters Helen Croslear and Thelma Bouie, a brother Carl Woodson Jr, a daughter Cindy Nisbeth (husband Errol), two sons; Albert Smith and John Smith, and a grandson Morgan Williams.

Alice Smith's family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Swan Funeral Home and Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church staff for their wonderful care and assistance and to family, friends, and neighbors for their many acts of kindness and support during her illness.

Memorial service will be held November 16, 2019 @ 10:00 am at Varick Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church located at 242 Dixwell Ave in New Haven CT. After a private Interment at Beaverdale Memorial Park, there will be a repast in the church Fellowship Hall.
