Barbara Caputo of Madison and Old Saybrook, CT passed away on October 22, 2026 at the age of 84. She was born on August 25, 1942 to parents Arthur and Anna (Maye) Leach in Danbury, CT, where she grew up.
Barbara graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1964 with a degree in English. She was the first member of her family to graduate from college, and was a proud member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. After college, Barbara worked as a social worker before starting a family. Later, Barbara returned to work, where she found success in sales and account management.
Barbara was always actively involved in her children’s young lives, attending countless swim meets, gymnastics practices, dance recitals, little league games, and school functions. Later, she did the same for her grandchildren, whom she cared for often, and who became “regulars” at all her favorite spots in Madison – The Madison Coffee Shop, RJ Julia Booksellers, and Scranton Memorial Library.
Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dominick Caputo, with whom she spent forty-three wonderful years.
Barbara is survived by her children, Brad Stark and Joey (Nathan) Bauer, her stepchildren Marc (Stacey) Caputo and Cindi Caputo, and her grandchildren Zane and Talia Bauer, and Max and Quinn Caputo.
Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She will be remembered by all who loved her for her quick wit, her sass, her style, and her grace. She was deeply loved, and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank Masonicare Hospice and Palliative Care Services for the care and compassion they showed to our mom in her final days.
A small, family graveside service will be held for Barbara at a later date. If you would like to honor our mom, please consider making a donation to Masonicare: masonicare.org.
