peacefully on July 12, 2020 at the Guilford House in Guilford, Connecticut after a
long illness with family by her side.
Carolyn was born on October 13, 1941 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late
Gerald and Edna Sloan, residing in Cranston, Rhode Island. Carolyn graduated
from Cranston East High School. She enjoyed spending time with her cousins Jim
and Bob Dunn as the Sloan and Dunn families were close growing up. Summer
trips to Cape Cod and trips to Jamestown, Rhode Island were special for each
family. Carolyn also enjoyed going to dance classes with her sister Marcia as they
were growing up. Her brother Gerald was greatly admired and loved by her four
sons.
On June 12, 1965, Carolyn married her husband William T True, and were married
for 55 years. They moved to Pawtucket, Rhode Island before buying their first
home in Cranston. They moved to Old Saybrook, Connecticut in 1970 and
continue to be residents of the community today. Carolyn became the proud mom
of four boys who she loved very much. Carolyn developed many cherished life
long friends during her time in Old Saybrook.
Carolyn had many favorite things to do throughout her time in Old Saybrook. On
any given summer day, you could find Carolyn and her four boys at the Town
Beach in Old Saybrook as she described it as the perfect place to bring the boys to
during the summer. It can easily be said that the True family all lived and worked
for many summers at the Old Saybrook Town Beach. Carolyn enjoyed time on the
beach with friends and family, and she was often one of the last people to leave the
beach for the day. She loved the smell of the salt air.
Carolyn worked at the Children’s Corner and My Second Home as a preschool
teacher. Many of the children who she worked with called her Miss Carol, and she
was often lovingly referred to by this name throughout the Old Saybrook
community by parents and kids alike during and after their time in preschool.
Carolyn enjoyed time attending Jazzercise classes. She had a love of antiques and
would enjoy antiquing. She loved her Volkswagon car Fritz, and she had a love for
completing and sharing arts and crafts projects. She enjoyed making cookies and
brownies during the holidays and for special occasions.
Carolyn is survived by and will be dearly missed by her husband William, her
sister Marcia and brother in law David Maneck of Scottsdale, Arizona, her son Bill
and his wife Jennifer with grandchildren Sarah, Will, and Megan of South
Berwick, Maine, her son Jeff and his wife Paige with grandchildren Sloan and
Kelsey of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, her son Scott and his wife Jennifer with
grandchildren Matthew and Courtney of Coventry, Rhode Island, and her son
Shawn and his wife Donna with grandchildren Zachary and Mackenzie of
Westbrook, Connecticut. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews. Carolyn
was predeceased by her parents Gerald and Edna Sloan, her sister Beverly, and her
brother Gerald, Jr of Cranston, Rhode Island.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses and staff of the
Guilford House for their care and support of Carolyn. We also would like to
express our thanks and appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Smilow
Cancer Care Center. We appreciate all that you did for her while in your care.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Smilow
Cancer Care Center, or to Old Saybrook Youth and Family Services.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Swan Funeral Home of Old Saybrook, CT,
