Charlie Neal McDaniel, 82 of Old Saybrook, CT passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Middlesex Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Charlie was born on February 25, 1938 in Maxton, North Carolina to the parents of Mary and Joe McDaniel. He attended school in Maxton until he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 16, 1955 and served until November 15, 1961 with an Honorable Discharge. He previously resided in Washington, DC where he married Betty Larue McCallum on October 3, 1957 before settling in Old Saybrook, CT. Upon settling in Old Saybrook, both Charlie and Betty worked at RR Donnelly’s where they remained employed until they retired. They raised their children in Old Saybrook and maintained lifelong friendships. A light hearted man who was devoted to family, Charlie possessed a gentle nature but was also known for his sense of humor and willingness to help others.
Charlie was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle of Old Saybrook, CT and an active member of the VFW. Past Worshipful Master of Prince Hall Grand Lodge #44, Willimantic, CT.
Charlie will be most remembered as being a die-hard fan of the New York Mets and Washington Redskins.
He is survived by his children, Regina (Edward) Martin, Reggie (Julie) McDaniel and Rodney (Theresa) McDaniel. His grandchildren, Chelsea, Edward Jr, Darius Martin. Kayla and Jaxon McDaniel, Michael and Kendra McDaniel who affectionately called him Pop Pop. Also his sisters Annie Wilkerson, Betty Thorpe, Yvonne McDaniel and brothers Jerry McDaniel, Randy McDaniel. Along with a host of nieces and nephews. Charlie was also predeceased by his wife, Betty in 2015. A private burial with Military Honors will take place at a later date in Middletown, CT. A celebration of life will take place at the VFW located in Old Saybrook, CT at a later date.
