Charlotte was the daughter of the late Charles and Clara (Swanson) Prunier and was born in New Haven on June 2, 1921.
Charlotte and Tom were married in 1944 and celebrated 62 years together. They were proud graduates of James Hillhouse High School. They moved to Westbrook in 1947 and purchased the Maples Motel near Chapman Beach. Initially a seasonal tourist business, the Maples would stay open year ‘round as they expanded and enhanced the property throughout the years. Tom worked as a contract administrator for the Defense Department, so the day-to-day operation of the motel fell to Charlotte. Many of the customers returned year after year for their shore vacations and they became fixtures in the summer life of the Maples. The Crawford family ran the Maples Motel for 53 years.
Charlotte was an active member of many civic and religious organizations throughout her life. She was a founding member of St Mark’s Womens’ Guild and a former president. She belonged to the Daughters of Isabella, the Golden Rule Club, and in later years, the Pukwana Club of Westbrook. She was active as a Scout leader when her children were growing up. Charlotte and Tom also enjoyed more than 30 winters in Hillsboro Beach, Florida.
Charlotte is survived by her three children, James of Westbrook and his wife, Elaine; Clara of Westbrook; and Patricia Crawford of Boylston, MA and her husband, Gerald Quam. She also leaves three grandchildren, Meredith Crawford of Madison, Nicholas Crawford of Brooklyn, NY, and Olivia Quam of Boylston, MA. She was predeceased by her sister, Doris Tobin of Milford and her brothers-in-law, Joseph Tobin and Rev. John J. Crawford of Wethersfield.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Peter Dixon, MD, and the caring folks of the Middlesex Hospice program.
The funeral procession will assemble on Thursday October 30th at 9am and will proceed to a 10am Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 222 McVeagh Road in Westbrook. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Westbrook. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, October 29 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook.
