Daniel Lee Roberts of Old Saybrook, formerly of Meriden, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2018 surrounded by family and friends, after a brief illness.

He was born on October 18, 1947 in Meriden, the son of the late John W. and Shirley (Dobratz) Roberts. Daniel was a Technical Education teacher and department chair in the Wallingford Public School System from 1971-2000. He was the sole proprietor of K+D Machine Services until his retirement in 2012. He was a Life Member of the Elks Club where he served on the scholarship committee for many years and a Life Member of the Meriden Boys and Girls Club. He served as committee chairman of the restoration of the Fairview Pavilion in Hubbard Park, and spearheaded the restoration of Endee Park Playground. Dan was Past President of Old Kelsey Point Beach Association and served on the board of Indiantown Association.

He was also a member of the Connecticut Society of Technical Educators throughout his career. He always upheld the value of technical education and worked hard to promote its importance in society. He was highly regarded by his students and maintained personal and working relationships with a great many of them throughout his life.

Mr. Roberts was a 1966 graduate of H.C. Wilcox Technical School where he received a Tool and Die Maker Certification. He went on to earn an Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Waterbury Sate Technical college, then a B.A., M.A. in Technical Education, and a sixth year degree in Administration from Central CT State University.

He enjoyed warm weather vacations in Florida and Antigua and loved fishing and boating at his home in Old Saybrook. His favorite pastime was helping his neighbors, friends, and family with “projects”.

Daniel is survived by his wife Elena; daughters, Monica Roberts and husband Nicholas Pearson of Sevenoaks, England; Jessica Mallon and husband James of Rosemont, NJ; twin brother John W. Roberts Jr. and wife Jody of Meriden; sister Deborah Zimmerman and husband William of Arizona; grandchildren; Vivienne, Georgia, Finnegan, Tyler, Matthew, and Jacob; many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best friend and “brother”, David Petros. He had many close friends, who he considered family, that were a great help and comfort to him in his time of need.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 24 from 11AM to 1PM with a memorial service immediately after at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westbrook Elks Scholarship committee or the Meriden Boys and Girls Club.

Dan was a whole lot of crazy and certainly back in the day--- we had a lot of good times .
Although our lives drifted apart for various reasons I will always remember the GOOD TIMES WE ALL HAD - and all the laughs.
My best memory;- Dan and all of us in England for his daughter Monica to be married there!--- The stories we could tell about that one trip and so many more memories of trips and crazy old days gone by will always be in the back of my mind.

Dan was a wonderful and loyal friend for many, many years. I met him playing racquetball in Wallingford and we developed a great relationship right until he passed away. He was still talking about projects he had planned as his time drew near. Our mutual love of boating and being on or near the water further strengthened our bond. He was a brilliant person who could design or fix almost anything and always shared his knowledge and time with his friends. A special thanks to Dave Petros who helped Dan in many ways through his years in Old Saybrook and especially towards the end. And thanks to Mike Esposito who was invaluable to Dan in taking care of things around the house while Dan gave directions from his seat on the golf cart. Elena was such a devoted and caring wife through this difficult time. This wonderful man will be truly missed and my memory of our great times together will linger in my mind forever.

Elena, please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of Danny. He was one of our fellow teachers at Sheehan for many years and was the best in his field. He was a very dedicated educator who helped many of his students succeed. I will miss his daily trips to see us and his smiles and the fun we always had all of those years. My God Bless him and have mercy.

Elena, I just heard of Dan’s passing. I’m incredibly sorry for your loss. If not for you and your husband, I would not have met my husband. My time with you and Danny at MTSHS, the Shop, the gym were all important stops in my story. Danny thank you for being a friend—when I really needed one.
