Edith Swain

September 20, 1923 – December 23, 2020

Edith (Tooker) Swain, 97, of Old Saybrook, the wife of the late Eugene (Geno) Swain passed away on Wednesday, December 23rd. She was born in New London, CT to Don Tooker and Florence (Way) Tooker. When she was 20, Edith assembled parts for torpedoes in a factory during World War II and was considered one of the Rosie the Riveters. She worked as a Bookkeeper at A&P in Old Saybrook and Old Lyme. She then left CT to move down to Russellville, AR and delivered The Courier Newspaper for over 25 years and finally retired in her 80’s. She had many friends at the paper and became friends with several of her customers over the years of dedicated service. Edith enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, and doing her crossword puzzles. Edith was known for her entertaining stories as well as her cheesecake. She spent her last few years at Stella Manor Nursing Center, where she quickly became a staff favorite. She moved back to Old Saybrook to Gladeview Rehabilitation to be closer to her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Richard and Neena Swain of Oil City, PA, and Dave and Eva Swain of Russellville, AR, her 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her daughters, Donna (Swain) Ramcke and Jeannette Swain.
