

Francis J. Herel Jr. of Old Saybrook, CT peacefully passed away on June 13, 2014. Born on September 24, 1932 to Francis J. Herel and Mae Mullin Herel. He was raised in Staten Island, NY. He graduated from Xavier High School, NYC in 1950, earned his B.S.S. degree in history and military science from Georgetown University in 1954, his MBA in management from Wagner College in 1963. He served honorably as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force and NY Air National Guard from 1955-1962 with active duty tours of duty in Alaska and Berlin, Germany. He worked for KPMG Peat Marwick in NYC, retiring in 1995 as Director of Personnel in their executive office in Montvale, NJ. He moved to Old Saybrook, CT in 2001. He is survived by his beloved wife Elizabeth Ivers Herel, his children Mary Herel Canty of Bronxville, NY and her husband James; Francis J. Herel III, of Fayetteville, NY and his spouse Pamela; Julie Helenbrook of Potsdam, NY and her husband Brian. Also step-children Eileen Dailey of Greenwich, CT and her husband James, William Weldon of Cooperstown, NY and his spouse Jeanette, Kent Weldon of Weston, MA and his spouse Meghan. He also has sixteen wonderful grandchildren. Mr. Herel was a member of the Knights of Columbus, served on the Parish Council and as an usher at St. John Church in Old Saybrook. Also served on the Board of Education, Norwich, CT Diocese. He volunteered numerous hours to S.C.O.R.E. and Meals on Wheels. Calling hours will be on June 18 from 4PM to 7PM at the Swan Funeral Home 1224 Boston Post Rd, Old Saybrook. Mass of Christian Burial at St John Church, 161 Main St, Old Saybrook, CT at 11AM on June 19. Burial will follow at St John’s Cemetery in Darien, CT at 2:30PM.
