George Donald Gwizd Sr.

July 10, 1928July 28, 2018

George Donald Gwizd, 90, of Old Saybrook, formerly of West Hartford, beloved husband of Christine Lozito Gwizd, passed away July 28, 2018. George was born on July 10, 1928, in Hartford, son of Samuel and Mary Gwizd. He graduated from Bulkeley High School and the University of Hartford. George served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Korea, where he photographed enemy territory and befriended local children. He worked for the Phoenix Insurance Company for 42 years. While on the job, he took to walking a coworker home two miles after work each day, despite the fact, as she later found out, that he hated walking. She was Christine, his beloved wife of 67 years. George and Christine were deeply involved in the towns of West Hartford and Old Saybrook. George served as Secretary of the Water Pollution Control Authority in Old Saybrook and as a member of the United States Power Squadron. An avid boater, he loved fishing for blue fish and organized deep-sea fishing trips into his late eighties. Above all, George loved Great Hammock Beach and its residents, and served as President of the beach association for more than 30 years. George was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Salvatrice, and brother-in-law, Louis. Besides his wife, Christine, George is survived by his daughter Mary-Jo Loveland and her husband R. Scott of Farmington, and by his son George Gwizd Jr. and his wife Debbie of Marstons Mills, MA. George is also survived by four loving grandchildren, Katherine Altman and her husband David of Sudbury, MA; Kristen Loveland and her husband Stephen Wertheim of Brooklyn, NY; Andrew Loveland of Cambridge, MA; and Samantha Gwizd of Knoxville, TN. George is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Colin and Brooke Altman of Sudbury, MA, and by his nephew Michael Michaud and niece Mary Ann Terk.

George was one of the first adults I met at the beach in our first year at Great Hammock. It was at the dead end. He had been fishing. We talked a bit, told me his name was George, and he gave me his bait so I could go fishing.

It was about 1967, I think.

He will be missed.

I am so very sorry for your loss and hope you can find solace in the love of all of us at GHB whose lives he touched. From serving as president and helping drag sinking boats out of the creek to telling wonderful stories about GHB of years past. He will be missed and forever remembered fondly. May God hold you in the palm of His hands in this dark time. We, the Farrell Family, send our deepest sympathies and prayers.

Pat and I send much love to Christine and the family. It was a great honor to know George with his magnetic smile. I loved him not only as a neighbor and friend but also like a father. I enjoyed visiting with him and could listen for hours to his many stories, wisdom and insight. He has helped us tremendously over the years by always keeping an eye on our place next door and providing us with help when something needed to be done. George had the most genuine, kind, loving and non-judgmental spirit and he will be missed greatly.
