James Francis Northrop

James (Jim, Jimmy) Francis Northrop, 67, of Chester, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026.

Born on July 9, 1959, Jim grew up in the Soundview neighborhood of Old Lyme before eventually moving to Old Saybrook. He was the son of the late Robert and Dolores (Gavin) Northrop.

Jim spent 32 years working for UPS and became a familiar and beloved face throughout the Old Saybrook community. Known by many as the “UPS man of Main Street,” Jim built countless friendships along his route over the years. His kindness, sense of humor, and ability to strike up a conversation with just about anyone made him much more than the person delivering packages—he was a friend to many.

Music was a lifelong passion for Jim. An avid music lover and guitar player, he could often be found with a guitar in his hands or listening to the artists he loved. Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones were among his favorites. His appreciation for great music stayed with him throughout his life. He loved going to concerts and experiencing music live with his childhood friends Ray and Mike.

When he wasn’t listening to music or playing guitar, Jim enjoyed golfing as well as fishing. Most importantly, he treasured spending time with his children, family, and friends. Jim was kind and selfless, always willing to help someone in need. A lifelong jokester and a friend to everyone, he had a way of making people feel welcome.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Ashley (Kyle) Cannon of Orange, grandchildren Ryder, Nicholas, Sawyer and Leila, his son Zachary Northrop of Chester; his stepdaughter, Erica Fulton of Guilford; and his siblings, Patricia (Walt) Jackson, Earl Northrop, Robert Northrop, and Barbara(BJ) Sinnott. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, former coworkers, and members of the community whose lives he touched throughout the years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Dolores Northrop; his sisters, Nora and Pamela; and his brother, Michael.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Jim at Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook on Saturday, October 17, 2026 from 10am to 1pm. A Celebration of Life will be immediate to follow at the Westbrook Elks Club, where family and friends can come together to share memories and celebrate a life that meant so much to so many.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
