Joe was born June 20, 1948, in Boston MA to Richard Kaplan and Beatrice McCrensky. His childhood in the Boston area instilled a lifelong passion for Red Sox baseball. He loved to attend games and continued to watch them nearly every night when he moved away from the area. Joe and Roberta met and fell in love in St. Louis, MO while Joe was stationed in the Air Force. Joe served for 7 years and was a Vietnam Veteran. Joe and Roberta loved to travel and took many family vacations over the continental US. In their retirement, they began traveling overseas, most recently England and then Italy. Joe was excited to achieve his lifelong dream of seeing the Colosseum in person. Joe enjoyed being a part of his community wherever he lived. In his younger years, he coached soccer for many seasons, taught elementary school, and more recently became an active member of the local Estuary Center in Old Saybrook.
He leaves behind his children Jeremy Kaplan of Knoxville, TN, Benjamin Kaplan of Houston, TX, Megan Hiles of Lunenburg, MA, and Rachel Kaplan of Essex, CT. Joe enjoyed spending time with his 9 grandchildren and recently traveled to North Carolina to visit with his two great grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and Richard Kaplan. He is survived by his wife, Roberta, their children, their grandchildren, their great grandchildren, and his brother Elliot Kaplan of South Carolina.
The family will be honoring his life in a private celebration.
