Joyce & John Smelings

Smelings, Joyce (Clarke), Joyce Smelings, 82 formally of Hartford, and currently of Westbrook, passed away peacefully Saturday May 14th, at Middlesex Hospital. Born September 3, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Rowland and Viola Clarke and grew up in Hartford. Over the years Joyce and her husband John of 62 years, enjoyed spending time on their boat the “Isle of View” and many of their vacations were spent in Florida. Joyce worked 33 years for Aetna Life Insurance Company, and after retirement spent their winters in Florida until Hurricane Rita destroyed their home. Joyce’s love of her family showed in everything she did and said. She was always the first to talk about how proud she was of her granddaughters. Joyce is survived by her Husband John, her son Bob and his wife Patti, her granddaughter Jackie Royce, husband Michael, and her granddaughter Kristine. Family and friends may visit the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, and Thursday May 19, from 5 to 7. A Service will be held on Friday May 20, at the First Congregational Church of Westbrook at 11:00.
