Lewis E. Weinstein

Lewis Elliott Weinstein, age 82, passed away January 1st, at the Essex Meadows Health Center. Born and raised in Boston, he attended the Boston Latin School and graduated from Brookline High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at the University of Massachusetts and after two years as a first lieutenant in the Air Force, he went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, Lew joined the IBM Corporation in their Boston Branch Office and began a 35 year career with the company. Transferred to the New York Regional Office in 1960, Lew and his wife Debbie settled in Weston, CT. After many assignments in Westchester County, he concluded his IBM career in the Milford, CT office.

Sailing, photography, and woodworking were Lew's life-long passions, winning awards in sailboat racing and photo competitions. In retirement, he added a new love for building working model steam engines and enjoyed the company of steam enthusiasts.

In 1989, Lew and Debbie moved to Essex, where he restored a 1756 house, joined the Essex Yacht Club, and volunteered at the Connecticut River Museum. He served as treasurer of the Essex Yacht Club for several years and later was Treasurer and Board Member of the Connecticut River Museum. Lew gave generously of his time and talents to further the missions of these organizations and made many friends in the community along the way.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years and two sons, David of Newton, MA, and Matthew and wife, Jacki, of Rio Rancho, NM.

A graveside burial service will be held at Riverview Cemetery, Essex, CT, on Friday, January 2nd at

11:00 am.

A memorial service to celebrate Lew’s life will be scheduled at a later date. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Connecticut River Museum or the Essex Historical Society.
