

Nelson Everett Engborg of Old Saybrook Connecticut was born in Stamford Connecticut to parents Barbara Simmel and Theodore Engborg. The younger of the two brothers, Nelson developed an interest in electronics early on while his brother pursued carpentry. Through the years they would collaborate on a multitude of projects. Both knew the basics of each other’s craft and shared a thorough knowledge of plumbing.
After graduating High School, Nelson attended Bridgeport Engineering. He worked for Sorenson Company in Stamford as a test technician before moving on to Telemark, Inc., in Stamford where he assumed the role of Senior Technician. In 1949 Nelson moved to HRM Electronics in New Canaan, Ct. as an Engineering Assistant where he designed, constructed and tested electronic temperature controllers.
From 1951 to 1953 Nelson served in the United States Army. As an Electronic Technician in the Signal Corps he Installed, maintained and instructed Class A microwave links at overseas bases. He attended Fort Monmouth Signal Corps School and was awarded MOS Certificates in Radar and Microwaves.
After being Honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, he gained employment with Barnes Engineering in Stamford, Ct. as an Electronics Technician. They were a manufacturer of infrared and electro-optical equipment and systems. He became Project Engineer and Division Manager in the Industrial Products Division where among other accomplishments he developed: Intrusion alarms, infrared scanning microscopes, hand-held non-contact thermometers and the portable R-value meter. He worked with the company for 32 years until they closed their doors. His name appears on seven company patents.
Nelson attended Wright Technical School and was awarded a certificate after completing a course in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
He graduated Norwalk State Technical College with an A.S. in Data Processing Technology. He was certified by Bridgeport Engineering Institute in computer languages and was employed in the evenings by them in the role of computer lab instructor.
Employed as an engineer by Minarad Spectrums in Trumbull, Ct., from 1985 to 1991, Nelson served as a consultant to them after his retirement.
Active member of Saint Saviour’s Episcopal Church in Old Greenwich, from 1965-1991., where he served in the role of Sunday School teacher; he and his brother Ted both taught 1st and 2nd grade students. He also served as an Acolyte and Property Chairman for several years. As Property Chairman some of his responsibilities included but were certainly not limited to: Maintenance and repairs of the compressor for the Churches pipe organ as well as service to the organ itself, maintenance of the furnace and emergency lighting and servicing the system for the electronic Church bells. He attended All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Ivoryton after moving to Old Saybrook.
Resident of Old Greenwich for 60 years he was a member of the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting. 6th District for 12 years, from 1962 to 1974, and a member of Old Saybrook’s Water Pollution Control Authority commission (WPCA) for 18 years of dedicated service. The Board wrote, “Mr. Engborg’s knowledge and expertise will be greatly missed.”
Always looking to keep busy, Nelson served for several years aboard the Valley Railroad Steam locomotive in Essex Ct. as a conductor.
Nelson’s hobbies were tinkering with electronics i.e. repairing them. Televisions, VCRs, radios and electric motors. He could repair virtually anything that was electronic or electro-mechanical. He was also adept at small engine repair and was a competent mechanic in his own right.
Nelson had an affinity for Pug dogs and cherished the four pugs that he and Barbara owned during their time together.
Nelson and his wife, Barbara were happily married for 58 years until her passing; in 2012.
Nelson leaves behind his daughter Christine and son Jeffrey. The majority of information contained herein was compiled by Nelson’s wife Barbara who was always prepared; for life and for death.
A special debt of gratitude and thanks is owed to Theresa Constantine who in the role of care-giver provided assistance and support tirelessly for Nelson in his last waning years.

Calling hours will be held 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5th at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook Ct.
