Norma (Hess) Dyson, 88, resident of Old Saybrook since 1963, and Westbrook since 1942, passed away May 16, 2021, after a brief illness with her family by her side. Norma was born June 25, 1932, in Hartford to the late Bernhard and Rose Hess, previously residing in New Britain.
Norma married Richard Bassett Dyson in 1953 and they made their home in Old Saybrook. She and her husband were founding members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in their hometown where Norma was the church organist for many years and sang in the church choir. Norma was also active in the Old Saybrook Garden Club, serving as president for a time, and the North Cove Yacht Club and Duck Island Yacht Club.
Norma was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished time spent with family and friends at Grove Beach Point in Westbrook. She was loving and generous and was a gracious host to all. She was an avid reader, skilled gardener, fabulous cook, and baker. She spent many summer days boating on Long Island Sound with her husband Richard on their sailboat Firebird.
Norma is survived and dearly missed by her daughters, Pamela Dyson and her husband Mark Lyons of East Wallingford, Vt., Carol Dyson of Westbrook; son David Dyson and his wife Linda of Westbrook; grandchildren, Ashley Dyson-Secor, Trevor Lyons, Cameron Lyons, Marissa Dyson, Chloe Lyons, and Amelia Dyson; her sister-in-law Lynda Dyson of Avon; her niece Susan Bazzano; and her nephews, Steven Dyson, Scott Dyson, and Shaun Dyson.
Norma’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to their extended family and neighbors for their kindness and support during her illness.
Funeral Services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Old Saybrook, followed by a Celebration of Life at Saybrook Point Inn. Flowers may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
