Patricia Ann Cowles

Patricia A. Cowles, 85, of Old Saybrook, passed away on Wednesday, May 22nd, at Gladeview Health Care Center. Born in New Britain, she was the daughter of the late Earle and Virginia (Murray) Cowles. Patty was blessed with two wonderful partners throughout her life – Michael Lynch and later Richard Gurnon.

After graduating from Central Connecticut State College with a degree in education, Patty started her career teaching first grade at Gaffney School in New Britain. Patty then went on to become principal of Northend School in New Britain, which was very special to her as she attended that school as a child. She then became the principal of Anna Reynolds School in Newington and ultimately became the assistant superintendent of instruction and professional development. Education was her passion and top priority. Patty loved kids and her primary focus was using her passion for education to make a difference in their lives. Every Halloween, Patty dressed as a witch and made witches brew for all the kindergartners. Patty enjoyed it as much as the children.

Patty had a quick wit, loved to laugh, was a seasoned shopper, and a great dresser. After retiring, Patty spent much of her time reading, walking on the beach, and watching sunsets in Old Saybrook. Many of her winters were spent in Venice, FL.

Patty is preceded in death by partners Michael Lynch and Richard Gurnon, and her sister Betsy Perkins. She is survived by brother-in-law John Perkins, her niece Ginny (Anthony) DiPaulo, her nephews Patrick (Carol) Perkins and Todd Perkins, many great nieces and nephews, cousin Sharon Napier and friend Susan Tracey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 31st, at 11:00 AM at St. John Church,161 Main Street, Old Saybrook, CT. Burial will be immediately following the Mass at Riverside Cemetery, Old Saybrook, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Donations can also be made to St. John Church.
