Peter A. Johnson of Westbrook, CT, passed away peacefully at age 81. His long, brave battle with cancer ended on Saturday, October 3, 2026. In his last days he was surrounded by family as he listened to Yankee games playing on TV.
Pete is survived by Sandra (Meyers) Johnson, his wife of 58 years, as well as their daughters Kristin Johnson of Enfield and Karin Johnson of Portland, and their grandson, Kaisson, of Portland. He is also survived by his brother Christopher Johnson and wife Gail, of Hartford and Westbrook, CT, and his sister in law Susan Picard and her husband Paul, of Southington, CT, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Pete was born in Hartford, CT, the son of Arthur and Helen(Suskie) Johnson of Hartford and Old Saybrook, CT. His family spent summers at the beach, where Pete and Sandy met as summer
kids, before making Westbrook their home in 1968, becoming “old salts” for over 50 years. They have spent many seasons sailing on Long Island Sound, on many different types of sailboats, exploring Duck Island, or making the long sail across to Mattituck, LI to meet up with friends at the marina. Pete was always busy keeping his yard neat, his house painted, the birds fed and watered. Pete also enjoyed kayaking with Sandy, in shoreline creeks, ponds, and down the CT river.
Pete graduated from Bulkley High School in 1963 and earned a degree in Business from UConn in 1968. He remained a devoted UConn basketball and football fan for the rest of his life, further proven by his collection of UConn hats, shirts, and mugs. He also loved the New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, and Philadelphia Eagles, (despite their record). He was a career salesman until retirement, while also finding time to enjoy various other interests including fishing, history, music, and his beloved cat family. Pete was an avid (and rapid) reader and could somehow read a thriller, while listening to music, and watching a game with the sound on mute.
Pete’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to his teams of doctors and nurses from the 4th and 7th floors at Middlesex Hospital, for the extraordinary kindness and care they provided. Pete’s family would also like to thank the dedicated emergency responders from Westbrook Ambulance and Fire, who have helped Pete in recent years. A special thanks to Westbrook Visiting Nurses Association, for their patience, kindness and care.
Pete’s family will memorialize him in a private ceremony. He will be put to rest at Cypress Cemetery in Westbrook. Donations in his honor may be made to Tunnels to Towers or St. Jude.
