Philip H. “Doc” Broadhurst III, 72, beloved husband of Joan McCone Broadhurst passed away on Monday, November 12, 2018 at Middlesex Hospital after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Bridgeport on October 27, 1946, he was the son of the late Philip H.and Norma Lindley Broadhurst.
Phil graduated from Fairfield Prep High School Class of ‘64 and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University Class of ‘68. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969-71 and later became a claims adjuster for Kemper Insurance Company from 1971–80. During that time he met his wife Joan. They enjoyed spending their time sitting on the deck with friends and family, cross country skiing and spending long weekends by the fire in Vermont. Phil later earned his Master’s degree from Fairfield University in Education and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in 1992. He was a teacher at Kolbe Cathedral H.S in Bridgeport from 1980-2012 and was recognized Connecticut Teacher of the year in 1984. He won the “Tim Russert Making a Difference Award” in 2011. Phil truly made a difference in the lives of many students during his time at Kolbe both as a teacher and coach of soccer and baseball. He loved teaching, especially math. Later he became the Assistant Principal at Kolbe Cathedral H.S from 2001-2011.
Phil was always an active member of his communities. He was President of the Black Rock Community Council from 1988-89 and the President of the Black Rock Little League from 1974-81 and 1986-1991. He was a member of the Penfield Power Squadron from 1965 to present and Commander of the Squadron from 1982-1983. He was on the Harbor Management Commission in Bridgeport from 1989-2006, he loved being around the water especially fishing. He was on the Old Saybrook Zoning Board of Appeals from 2011 until present. Phil was a member of the Old Saybrook Board of Education. He was a parishioner at St. John Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He organized the Math Club at St. John School from 2013-2018, and was the starter at the Fenwick Golf Club in Old Saybrook. Philip enjoy cross country skiing, fishing, golf, and gardening. He spent a lot of time tending to his garden, and it was a beautiful sight enjoyed by anyone who visited. Most of all, Phil enjoyed time spent with his family. He will be greatly missed.
Besides his wife Joan, he is survived by his stepson, who was a true son, David Sikorski and his wife Katie and cherished granddaughters Hannah and Riley Sikorski all of Wayne, NJ. He is also survived by three sisters; Anne Farrow and her husband Jason of Norwalk, Mary and Norma Broadhurst of Chestertown, MD, his sister-in-law, Judy McCone of Bridgeport, his nieces and nephew, Catie, Nellie, and Ben Farrow and several cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 15th from 4 - 8 PM at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd. Old Saybrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 16th at 10 am in St. John Church 161 Main St. Old Saybrook. Burial at Lawncroft Cemetery in Fairfield.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Connecticut oncology, Middlesex Hospice and the aides from Senior Bridge for the care and support of Phil.
