

He was born April 1, 1938, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Robert Gerald and Frances Virginia (Bennett).
He was married to Elaine Agnes Rich on July 9 1960. Educated in England, he spent his entire professional career with The Hartford Courant. He had a great love of the water and his association with the United States Power Squadron led him to become passionate about boating education and boater safety. He was ultimately USPS Vice Commander and National Education Officer. He was a longtime member and Past Commodore of the Hamburg Cove Yacht Club as well as a member of the Essex Corinthian Yacht Club. He was an avid philatelist and a lifetime member of the American Philatelic Society.
His greatest joy was the company of his many friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Elaine, his children Richard Jr. of Greenville, NC, Christopher and his wife Kate, Kimberly and her husband Andrew Champion, grandchildren Sophie, Felse, Bronwyn and Henry Kyle,all of Old Lyme, his sisters Margaret Rosenberger and Ursula ( Gene ) Kirschner, Sisters-in-law Maryanne (Andrew) Mank, Geraldine (Edward) Olander and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Calling hours will be held on Friday August 21st from 5-8 pm at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday August 22nd at 11 am in St. Matthias Church, 317 Chesterfield Rd., East Lyme. A private burial will follow the Mass. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the United States Power Squadron Educational Fund PO Box 30423 Raleigh, NC 27622.
