Bob was born on March 8, 1937, in Medford, MA to Theodore R. Higgins and Katharyn (Buck) Higgins. He graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon and attended Tufts University before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he received an honorable discharge. On July 6, 1963, he was married to Suzanne Greene in Westfield, New York.
Bob spent much of his professional life as a systems analyst, but his true calling was always the sea. A licensed U.S. Coast Guard boat captain, he served as the captain of the Sabino at Mystic Seaport. In addition to his work at Mystic Seaport, Bob also was a charter boat captain and sailed extensively, taking his family and friends on excursions. His steady hand at the helm and calming presence was a testament to his deep knowledge of the water. He spent countless happy days at Island Cove Marina in Old Saybrook tinkering around and socializing with other mariners.
Bob’s talents extended far beyond sailing. He was a gifted craftsman with a remarkable ability to build things from memory. One of his most cherished pastimes was crafting intricate wooden boat models, recreating the boats that he owned. He also rebuilt several wooden boats. Bob’s hands were always shaping something beautiful and functional, driven by both skill and passion. He leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, adventure and an unshakable love for life on the water.
Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Suzanne; his two daughters, Katharyn and Christine; his son in law, Joseph Granja; his grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew and Samantha; as well as his great granddaughter, Carolyn. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Bob’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. He had been lovingly cared for at home by his wife and by Middlesex Health Hospice. Memorial gifts may be made to Middlesex Hospice.
