Ruth A. Doherty, affectionately known as “Eagle Gram”, passed away on April 9, 2026, at the age of 75, due to a brief illness. Born and raised in Meriden, CT and daughter of a WW I veteran, Ruth spent her life caring for others, most admirably as a nurse. Her service in the emergency room, VNA, and nursing homes allowed Ruth to be a strong advocate for those in the later stages of their lives. After retirement she continued her service to others as a paraprofessional, church volunteer, and most importantly, as a loving (and doting!) grandmother.
A woman of deep faith, Ruth was a devoted member of the Catholic Church. She actively sacrificed her time and energy by leading prayer ministries, chaperoning retreats, and teaching confirmation classes. Ruth’s faith directed every facet of her life; she treasured her deep personal love of the Eucharist, the sacraments, and the Church.
With a kind, caring nature and wonderful sense of humor, Ruth’s generosity was most profound in gift-giving to others. Her love of animals was unsurpassed, particularly of her beloved Alaskan malamute, Neeko. She cherished horses in her younger years and later developed a special admiration for eagles, the inspiration behind her nickname. Eagle Gram also found great joy in visiting the beaches of Maine and took pride in her Polish and Irish heritages.
Ruth is survived by her son, Kelsey Doherty, his wife Anne, and their three daughters: Elizabeth, Natalie, and Juliette. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 11:00am at St. John Church, Old Saybrook, CT. There will be no calling hours, and a private burial will take place at the convenience of the immediate family.
