
Shirley Yates, 87 of Old Saybrook and Fort Lauderdale, Fl., passed away August 17, 2011. She was born October 16, 1923 in Hartford. She is preceded in death by parents, Frederick and Frances (Koslowski) Carlton, husband, William H. Yates and son William C. Yates. Shirley is survived by daughter, Gail Van Dalen of Old Saybrook, grandson, Britton Van Dalen and his wife Natalie (Drungle) of Chicago and two great grandchildren, Caroline and William Van Dalen. Shirley is also survived by brother, Robert Carlton and his wife Bonnie of West Hartford.
Shirley graduated from St. Joseph College in West Harford and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. She resided in East Hartford where she taught in the local school system before moving to Ft. Lauderdale. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family at the beach, debating politics, crossword puzzles and gardening.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, August 20, at the Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main Street, Clinton, from 8:30 AM until 9:15 AM at which time the procession will leave for at 9:30 AM Funeral Mass at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, McVeigh Rd., Wesbrook. Committal to follow at St.Mary’s Cemetery in E. Hartford. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Joseph College Scholarship Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association of Connecticut in memory of Shirley Yates.
