Stephen Patrick Donnelly

March 29, 1935August 19, 2020

Donnelly, Stephen Patrick of Westbrook CT passed away peacefully Wednesday Aug 19, 2020 at the age of 85. Born in New Britain CT to the late Dr. Stephen P. Donnelly and Gertrude Bardeck Donnelly Walther, Steve was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, June Walsh Donnelly of New Britain, CT. He will lovingly be remembered by his three Daughters, Elizabeth Donnelly of Westbrook, CT, Patricia Donnelly of Brookline MA, Maureen Scott and husband Thomas Scott of North Andover, MA; his three grandchildren Abbey Barrientos, Liam Scott and Patrick Scott. His two brothers Michael Donnelly and wife Joan of FL, Philip Donnelly and wife MaryEllen of MD, several nieces and nephews, and as his companion Patricia Gately. He was predeceased by his sister MaryAnn Patterson.

Steve attended St. John’s Preparatory School, MA and Bryant College, RI. From School he headed off to the family business, the Donnelly Brick Company which had been established by his Irish ancestors many years prior. The brick company was iconic for the red clay brick it produced. This led Steve into his lifelong career of brick sales where he continued to work right up until his death.

Steve had a zest for life which left no stone unturned. As a result, he had numerous fiends who loved being in his company. He was a man of many words and stories and his fast wit and sense of humor was infectious and will always be remembered. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved cruising around Long Island Sound on his pontoon boat to the sounds of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. He taught his daughters and grandchildren the ways of the waters and how to respect the sea. We shed a tear that he is with us no more, wear a grin to all the happiness and humor he brought to all. His was a life well lived. Loved by everyone who knew him. He left quite a mark on all the lives he touched. He will be missed.

A private services and burial will be held in Westbrook CT.

Dear Beth, Patty and Maureen,
I will always cherish the times we had at the beach with you, Uncle Steve, Aunt June and our family. I loved going out on your Dad's pontoon boat tours. When Eleanor and I visited, he would grab us both for a boat ride. As a kid, such rides were a nice break in the day between swimming, or playing and hanging around with you cousins - or having mud fights at low tide! The hospitality and willingness of your Father and Mother to open up their cottage/home to a bunch of crazy kids was amazing and always appreciated.
Love always, your cousin,

David King

My deepest sympathies to Steve’s daughters, his brothers and their families. As a young architect, I met Steve on a professional level and our friendship grew from there. He was a great guy, always with a joke or a quip, always upbeat. I’ll miss him a lot.

Many of my childhood memories include your Dad, fishing and cruising on the "Float Boat", 4th of July Parties, Sundays at Shuttle Meadow Avenue. All include laughter and smiles! I am sure my Dad is waiting in line behind June and his family to welcome him "home." With Heartfelt Sympathy, Kateri

I owned a beach house @ the beginning of Riverview, down the street from Steve for approx. 6 years. He would graciously invite my kids, wife and I out on his pontoon and he take us around Clinton Marina and all the hidden areas of Westbrook. He would play and sing to Frank Sinatra and tell my kids jokes. We all enjoyed those days with Steve.

RIP you will be missed.

Very kind hearted man.

Sorry for your loss

I was deeply saddened to read of the death of old friend Steve. I hadn't seen Steve in many years but have never forgotten the good times hob-nobbing together, in our youths over 65 years age. He was a charming, witty, and kind person and the obituary writer got it right in saying " a life well lived". My condolences to the family.

I have known Steve for all of. My life (75 years).our mothers lived in the same multi family house when they were growing up. We spent a lot of time with the Donnelly’s at Grove Beach Point while we were at.Grove Beach Terrace a few cottages away. Much later in life he knew my husband Ken who also grew up in New Britain and after my husband passed he knew my domestic. Partner and we saw him many times.at The Blue Crab and the Elks Club. He was a long time friend and will be missed

Steve was a life long friend. We knew each other since we were in grammar school. We stayed in touch all through the years. He married June whose family was very close to mine. I have fond memories of all the fun and laughs that we had on the pontoon boat. Steve always generously included many of my friends who were grateful for a fun time on the water. I could always rely on his fourth of July parties at the beach for a great time. I will truly miss his sense of humor and unique sayings. May he rest in peace.
