Suellen Kozey McCuin, 49, of Essex, CT, beloved wife of J. Scott McCuin, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015, with her family and friends at her side after an unexpected and brief illness. Suellen was born in Derby, CT to Madelyn Hart Kozey and the late Walter Kozey of Old Saybrook, CT. She graduated from Old Saybrook High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Central Connecticut State University. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Essex, CT. Suellen enjoyed a successful career in government affairs and was most recently Executive Director for the Connecticut Council of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. She was an outstanding leader in the fight to protect the 1,000 acre forest now known as “The Preserve” located in her childhood town of Old Saybrook and her current home in Essex. Suellen was an avid protector of the environment and loved animals of all kinds, but especially horses and dogs. She often recounted childhood stories of riding horses in Old Saybrook in many parades and on the beaches. Suellen shared many special moments with those who were close to her and loved taking family trips to Watch Hill and Lauderdale by the Sea, all of which have left us with many unforgettable memories. Suellen will be greatly missed by her family, and the vast number of people she had connected with over the years, who knew how passionate she was about all things good in life. Suellen is survived by her husband Scott and their two beautiful children, Maddy and Owen; her mother Madelyn Hart Kozey of Old Saybrook; her sister Marilyn Abrahamsson and her husband Glen Abrahamsson, nephews Ben, Gunnar and Zac of Old Lyme; her brother Paul Kozey and wife Anastasia, niece and nephews Hannah, Danielle and Rick of Old Saybrook; her brother John Kozey of Quaker Hill; her sister Kathleen Lunz and her husband Chris, nephew and nieces, Connor, Grace and Caitlyn of Ivoryton; her mother-in-law Betty McCuin of Enfield; and her sister-in-law Heather McCuin Wasileski and brother-in-law Steve Wasileski, niece and nephew, Peyton and Parker of Enfield. Calling hours for celebrating Suellen and her life will be at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook on Friday, August 28 from 6-9 p.m. A mass service and reception will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, 14 Prospect Street, Essex. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kozey McCuin Children Education Fund, c/o Essex Savings Bank, PO Box 950, Essex, CT 06426, or The Old Saybrook Land Trust.

Just received the saddest
news via text from my sister as I am on the Canyon lCreek fire in Oregon. My sincerest condolences and prayers for all the family. I was a classmate of Suellens and my mom & dad longtime friends of Walt & Madaleine from when they 1st moved to town
50+ yrs ago. I remember playing on her rocking horse as a toddler & her love for animals through our high school years together, she will be dearly remembered & missed!

Suellen is a loved member of our yoga community here at All That Matters. Her bright smile and quiet wisdom filled a room. I know Suellen as a loving mom, great teacher and as a person who felt so deeply. Suellen was a healer- what ever she felt deeply about grew. Thank you Suellen for touching all our lives. May your family always know your love and wisdom. Our prayers are with them. Joan

I hope as you walk with your children through the preserve Suellen and Maddy helped save, her spirit will wrap around you all and give you some peace. I didn't know Suellen but from what I now know I wish I did. So sorry for your loss.

Scott and Family,
Our deepest sympathy for your loss. I'm sorry but I'm at a loss for words, just that it's unimaginable to have such a loss, and to have it happen this quickly. Again so very sorry for your loss.
