Sylvia Marie Schmitt passed away peacefully on Sunday May 21, 2017 at the age of 94 in Middlesex Hospital with her family by her side. She was born March 17, 1923 in Meriden CT to William Del Giorno and Ann (Vuolo) Del Giorno. Sylvia graduated from Connecticut Teachers College in New Britian CT and started teaching business subjects, accounting and typing at Laurel Business College.Later she taught at Maloney High School in Meriden CT and finished her teaching career at Morgan High School in Clinton CT.
Her next adventure began when she started as a travel agent at Main Street Travel in Old Saybrook CT, where she pursued her lifelong dream of being a first-class worldwide tour guide. Sylvia is survived by her three children, Candace Schmitt Beacham and her husband Paul of Killingworth, her beloved son Gary Schmitt of San Diego CA, Heidi Schmitt Pascucci of Durham CT and Sylvia’s precious granddaughter Priscilla Pascucci.
She is also survived by her two sisters, Barbara Middleton and Elizabeth (Bette) Del Giorno of Old Saybrook CT, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was an active member of the Old Saybrook Republican Woman’s Club and St. John’s Church. She enjoyed being a Literacy Volunteer on the shoreline, a member of the Red Hatter, and a longtime patron of the Goodspeed Opera House. In her younger years, she participated in many productions at local theaters.
Sylvia laughed, loved, lived life to the fullest and was an amazing Mother. She will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Sylvia’s behalf to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.
