

Born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, Thomas graduated from Weaver High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to public safety and quality assurance, working as a Quality Control Inspector at the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Plant and later as a Police Officer in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.
Thomas was deeply committed to his community. He was an active and longtime member of both the Old Saybrook Police Department and the Old Saybrook Fire Department. In 2024, at the age of 88, he was honored as the longest-serving police officer in the department's history. In recognition of his decades of service, the Old Saybrook Police Department retired his badge number.
He is predeceased by his former wives, Patricia B. Newton and Judy A. Newton. Thomas is survived by his loving daughters: Wendy A. Mattice (David), Cynthia L. Dopp (Daniel), and Tracey E. Collins (Kevin); and by his cherished grandchildren: Rachael Mattice, Maegan Collins, and Ryan Collins. Thomas is also survived by many nieces and nephews
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Katherine Luther Home for the compassionate care they provided to Thomas in his final days.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, CT. A graveside service will follow at Riverside Cemetery, 59 Sheffield Street, Old Saybrook.
