OLD TOWN - Alice Margret "Lorraine" Cox Dunn, 81, wife of the late of Philip A. Dunn Sr., died Jan. 4, 2011, of heart failure at a local hospital after a period of failing health. She was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Old Town, the oldest of the six children of Harold and Patricia (Martin) Cox. Lorraine graduated from Old Town High School in 1945 and worked a variety of jobs in the greater Old Town area, including O.G. Morin's, Chapman's Machine Shop and W.T. Grant Co. She eventually retired in 1994 from Eastern Maine Medical Center as a housekeeping supervisor. She married Philip A. Dunn, May 11, 1957, and together they raised four children. After her husband's death, Lorraine became the primary caregiver of her children, Patrick and Alice, who both struggled with cerebella ataxia, a progressive deterioration of motor skill and coordination. She was a faithful communicant of Holy Family Church, Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, Old Town; a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 3381, Old Town; and a life member of Old Town Knights of Columbus Council No. 2537 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, going out to eat, visiting with her cousins in the Burr and Hamel families. Lorraine especially enjoyed playing Knights of Columbus bingo with her friends, Thelma Boutin and Maryanne Bragdon; and going to "breakfast" with her cousin, Betty Anne Dionne, Audrey Howe and friend, Hester Labree. She was proud of the achievements of her immediate family and the many activities of her grandchildren. The family thanks her "earth angels," neighbors, Richard and Rita Goodwin for their continued assistance in helping her stay independent. Lorraine is survived by her son, Philip Dunn Jr. and his wife, Cathy, and their children, Michelle and Brian, of Old Town; her daughter, Paula and her husband, Ralph Sprague Jr., and their children, Emily Sprague and Peter Sprague, Shelley Wyman and her husband, Chris, all of East Millinocket, and Ralph Sprague III of Millinocket; great-grandchildren, Arianna and Isaac Priest, Elizabeth and Owen Wyman, and Jericka and Alyson Sprague; brother, Charles Cox and his wife, Anita, of Orono; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Cox of Orrington and Edna Lucas of Bangor; brother-in-law, Harris Dunn Jr. of Old Town; many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Philip A. Dunn Sr., she was predeceased by her parents; her children, Mark, who was an infant, Patrick and Alice; and her siblings, Mary Campo, Lester Cox, James Cox and Paula Walchdorf. The family thanks Dr. Chris Ritter for his continuous years of service to our mother and to the doctors and staff of Eastern Maine Medical Center emergency room and intensive care units for their compassionate care of our mother in her final hours. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Church, Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, Old Town. A light luncheon will be afterward at the parish hall.
