

OLD TOWN& STETSON, ME & EAST HAMPTON, CT—Alice G. May, 89, died peacefully March 19, 2011 at an Orono health care facility. She was born February 6, 1922 on The Point, Newport, RI a daughter of William and Maude (Lewis) Nimmo.
Alice grew up on Pennacook Ave, Newport, RI and was a graduate of Rogers High School. On September 29, 1941 she married her high school sweetheart John A. May. Following her husband’s release from the service, they resided in Lebanon, CT for several years before moving to East Hampton, CT in 1956 where they built their dream home. While raising four children, she also worked partime in various positions including housekeeping, over 10 years at Wall’s Dairy, and as a sales associate at Marlborough Country Barn for a number of years. Following her husband’s retirement, they moved to Stetson, ME. She was employed at the Lighting Studio, Bangor, ME for several years. She and her husband enjoyed quilting and embroidery, and attending various craft fairs where they enjoyed both selling their goods and chatting with people. They also enjoyed traveling and photography. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Old Town. Alice was a life member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was a very proud “Air Force Mother” as all four of her sons served in the Air Force. Alice will be fondly remembered as a happy, upbeat woman that loved life itself. She always had a smile to share, never a bad word to say, and made a difference to everyone whom she met.
She is survived by two sons John “Jack” May of Hermon, Gordon May and his wife Jaunitta of Dedham; daughter-in-law Carol May of Old Town; five grandchildren Karen May, Michael May and his wife Mandy, David May and his companion Jodi Leigh, Jessica Rojo and her husband J.P., Morghan Hendsbee and he husband Chris; 8 great grandchildren Kenny, Emma, and Olivia Chambrello, Conner and Sadie May, Kai and Kianna Rojo, and Ariyah Hendsbee; a brother Johnny Nimmo and his wife Carol of Natick, MA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband John A May in 1996; and two sons Kurt May and Richard May; and a brother Bill Nimmo.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Orono Commons for the compassionate care given to Alice.
A celebration of Alice’s Life will be conducted 4PM Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home where friends may call from 2PM until time of service. Burial will be at a later date at Mt.
