He grew up on Indian Island. He served in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany. Upon discharge, he moved to New York City and later lived in North Miami Beach, Fla. He returned to his ancestral homeland, Indian Island, in 1989. He was a spiritual leader and promoter of peace who was loved by many. He was most proud of his work with Native inmates at the Maine State Prison and Wabanaki Repatriation. He served as vice-chief of the Penobscot Nation.
Arnold is survived by his loving wife, Jane (Worden) Neptune; her children, Todd Smith and his wife, Ann, Lisa Smith and her husband, James Locke; stepgrandchildren, Katalin Daku, Cale Rogers, Barrett Smith, Abigail and Isabella Locke-Smith; his sister Edwina's children, Eileen McGillicuddy, Patrick and David Almenas; his brother Arthur Jr.'s children, Stephen, Neana, Stanley, Martin, James and Janice Neptune; his brother Melvin's children, Dana, Doreen, Marguerite, Sherry and Lenorey Neptune; his brother Clement's children, Paula, Annette and John Neptune; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary (Simon) Neptune; and siblings, Harrison, Fernald, Melvin, Franklin, Clement, Arthur Jr. and Edwina Neptune.
Traditional ceremonies will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Penobscot Nation Community Building, 12 Wabanaki Way, Indian Island, where friends may call 1-3 p.m. Interment will be at Tribal Cemetery. All are invited to share a pot luck feast at the community building after services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Penobscot Nation Museum, 12 Down St., Indian Island, ME 04468.
