

OLD TOWN—Cynthia “Ruth” Agar, 79, died peacefully October 31, 2014 at her home shared with her daughter and son-in-law in Old Town, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 12, 1935 in Lakewood, NJ a daughter of Ralph and Mary (Windeler) Armstrong.
Ruth grew up in Union, NJ, attended Douglass College majoring in Home Economics and Chemistry. While at college she met her husband William Peter Apgar of Lebanon, NJ, a strategic Air Command Pilot in the Air Force. Following college Ruth and Bill moved to Maine where they raised their six children. Ruth was a teacher for over 30 years at East Grand Schools, teaching several grade levels but her most favorite were high school English and Literature. After retirement she moved to Old Town where she was very active member of the United Baptist Church of Old Town, AAUW Book Club, the Piecemakers Quilt Club, and the Bridge club. Ruth also swam three mornings a week at the Old Town YMCA. Ruth’s happy time was when she was cooking for large family gatherings, church events, and occasionally for guests at two sporting lodges. Ruth’s pleasant and graceful manner and her love for educational conversation will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband William Apgar, and sister Mary Hermann of PA. She is survived by six children four daughters Susan Apgar and her husband Butch Myers of Old Town, Juliet Sandrowicz and her husband Sandy of FL, Christina Apgar and her long time friend Aaron Moody of NH, Victoria DalPozzo and her husband Peter of CA, two sons David Apgar and his wife Suzanne of Danforth and Jonathan Apgar and his wife Heather of VA; grandchildren Alexander, Nicholas and Nathaniel Sandrowicz, Bill, Peter, and Mathew Apgar, Julia and Christopher DalPozzo and Daniel and Emma Apgar; sister Elinor Wilson of AZ; her special feline friends Ernie and Murphy, were her faithful and comforting companions during her illness.
Friends may call 5-8PM Thursday at the Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town. A funeral service will be conducted 1PM Friday at the United Baptist Church of Old Town. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Immediately following the graveside services, all are invited to return to the church hall for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.
