He was a proud World War II veteran having served with the U.S. Army serving in the South Pacific. He served in various campaigns including Guadal Canal, Asiatic Pacific Theater, and the Philippines. He enjoyed times at Dobsis Lake and was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Upper Dobsis Lake." He worked at the Old Town Paper Mill for 34 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Life Members Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3381, Old Town, and the MOC Puptent 21.
He is survived by two children, Charles Hamel and his wife, Jan, of Madagascal Pond and Mary Ellen Baker and husband, Joseph, of Upper Dodsis Lake; grandchildren, Scott, Kevin, Danny, David, Peter and Michelle; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Delia Trimm of Bradley; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Eugenia (Veazie) Hamel, in 1971; and nine siblings.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday.
