

INDIAN ISLAND—Gary M. Attean, 81, died peacefully September 26, 2021 at home surrounded by his family that provided him with compassionate care allowing him to remain at his residence. He was born on December 31, 1939 at the Attean family homestead on Orson Island, Maine.
Gary was a talented athlete while in school, following high school he enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served his country. Upon discharge, Gary returned to Maine for a short time before returning to the sea as a Merchant Marine. He was very proud of the fact that later in life, he returned to school and received a Master’s Degree for the University of Maine in Orono. He loved to travel and explore the world. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed all types of music but especially loved Elvis and Classical Music. He will be remembered for this pool shooting ability. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion of Elks.
He is survived by three children Michele Attean of Indian Island, Dave Attean of Indian Island and Chad Attean of Colordao; grandchildren Chuck Attean of FL, Jessica Alicea-Santiago of Orono, Thomas Attean of Holden, Aspen Slye of MA, Dakota Kingsbury of VA, and Jacob Attean of CO; several great grandchildren; sister Ruth Attean Johnson of Bangor; former wife and close friend Juanita Emerson of Indian River; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and five siblings.
A time of memorial gathering will be held 1-3PM Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main Street Old Town. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 3:30 pm Friday at the Tribal Cemetery, Indian Island.
