OLD TOWN – Janet S. “Jan” Campbell, wife of Merlin Campbell, peacefully passed away on November 16, 2019 at Northern Light EMMC, after a lengthy illness. Jan was born in Old Town, December 9, 1934, the daughter of Manley H. and Thelma P. (Haskell) Smith, Sr. Jan started her working life as a receptionist in a doctor’s office, then became a bank teller. In the fall of 1953, she met the love of her life at choir rehearsal at the Old Town United Methodist Church. Two years later, Jan and Merlin were married and moved to Pennsylvania to live and work. Jan worked as a teller in Morrisville, PA, while her husband worked on construction before fulfilling his military obligation. They moved back to Maine in 1959 and raised two children, Scott and Pamela. In 1986, after the children were grown, Jan and Merlin bought a home on Cold Stream Pond where they enjoyed 20 happy years. Jan loved the swimming, boating and just being near the water. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and daughter, as well as a friend to all. Jan and Merlin recently celebrated 64 years of marriage. In addition to her husband, Jan is survived by son and daughter in law, Scott and Bonnie Campbell; grandsons, Brian Campbell and Dan Campbell; great grandsons, David and Dylan; sister, Dorothy Haverlock; sister in law, Mary Smith; sister in law and husband, Elna and Jerry Campbell-Wade; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Pamela Lyn Campbell; her parents; and her siblings, Manley H. Smith Jr. and Joan Burgoyne. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the Palliative Care staff at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center for thoughtful guidance given to the family during Jan’s time there; as well as a very special thank you to Jan’s niece, Bonnie Doiron, for her many kindnesses in the latter stages of Jan’s illness. A celebration of Jan’s life will be held 10 am, Thursday, November 21, 2019 at the Old Town United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Tracey Reeves officiating. Interment will be at Lawndale Cemetery in the spring.
