OLD TOWN--Kenneth R. Taylor, 88, went peacefully to be with the Lord on July 15, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Old Town, Maine, June 5, 1931, the son of Peter and Leona (Richard) Taylor.
Ken was educated in St. Joseph and Old Town schools. He worked in the Old Town shoe shops starting at Moose River Shoe Shop. It was there that Ken met Marie Ange Boutot in 1952, and started their lifelong journey together. They were married on July 3, 1954 at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Old Town. In the 1960’s, while still working in the shoe shops, he started working for his dad, Peter, at the Shuffle Inn on French Island in Old Town. Dad truly loved to tend bar at the Shuffle Inn. Soon after he left the shoe shop and started working full time for his dad. When his dad was ready to retire Ken purchased the business and operated it with his wife, Marie, for 20 plus years. Several of his siblings and relatives also worked at the Shuffle. Following the sale of the restaurant, Kenny worked for the City of Old Town Sewage Treatment Plant. Upon “retirement”, he worked at Hermon Meadows Golf Course for 25 years through 2018.
Ken had many passions in life, but family and faith and his church were top priority. Beyond that, he loved the game of golf. He started playing in his late twenties and continued until the age of 87. He truly loved his years at Hermon Meadows, playing with the guys, as well as his Thursday morning seniors’ tournament. For 35 years he participated in a golf outing with his buddies to Mactaquac, NB, Canada. Most weeks you could find his name and results in the Bangor Daily News. As well as weekly accolades, he also shot three hole-in-ones during his playing years. In the later years Marie took up the game so they would play together each Sunday at Hidden Meadows in Old Town
Ken was also passionate about hunting especially rabbit hunting. Before the golf bug bit him he loved fly fishing and spending time with his Dad at Molunkus Stream, on the annual trip to fish and pick fiddleheads. When his dad purchased the hunting camp in Passadumkeag, Ken fell in love with the area and spent as much time as he could there, especially during the fall hunting. Hunting wasn’t the only thing he did at camp, cribbage was a tradition whenever the gang was at camp. He shot his last deer 22 years ago in “the swamp,” where he spent so much of his time hunting with his Dad, Brothers, and son, Glenn.
When Ken’s grandchildren were involved with sports and other activities, he was their biggest fan. His love for hockey may have started while watching his grandsons play, but it carried over to becoming a dedicated Maine hockey fan for over 30 years, attending most games with his daughter, Donna. His love for Boston sports was unparalleled. If he had a sports hero, it was definitely Ted Williams. The recent success for all the Boston teams made him proud to be a New Englander.
Kenny developed many close friendships throughout his lifetime. During his later years, his friendship with neighbor, Jim Mitchel, became more like a family bond. Kenny and Jim were true buddies.
Kenny was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Leona (Richard) Taylor and sister-in-law, Carolyn (Vigue) Taylor.
Kenny is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marie Ange Boutot Taylor. In addition, he leaves behind his children, Glenn Taylor and wife, Dawn of Bradley, Karen Martell and husband, Randy of Guilford, Donna Taylor-Schmidt of Orono, Elizabeth Campbell and husband, James of Milford, Rachel Parent and husband, Roger II of Old Town, and Cindy Jane Taylor of Holden. He is also survived by his brothers Robert and wife, Barbara of Sacramento, CA, Phillip and wife, Clara, of Old Orchard Beach, ME, and Peter and wife, Mary, of Washington, ME. He will be missed by several grandchildren, Heather, Gregory, Eric, Kailey, Hilary, Taylor, Korey, Justin, Heidi, Andrew and Kristina; and great grandchildren, Lydia, Ellie, Lyle, Alex, Nicholas, Jacob, Aiden, Emma, and Olivia.
